Amarillo vs. Coronado

LUBBOCK, TX- The Amarillo High Sandies continued its strong district play, after an offensive showing that resulted in a 20-10 win at Lubbock Coronado (12-13, 7-3) Tuesday night in a district 3-5A matchup.
There was no shortage of offense between the two teams, with both teams combining for a total of 32 runs on 26 hits. TCU signee SS Rhett Maynard (Ranked No. 139 in the PBR 2019 class rankings, and No. 29 ranked SS) would lead the way for Amarillo, posting 4-for-6 day, with two triples, and a pair of doubles, while driving in seven runs for the Sandies. Coronado’s sophomore RF Charlie Robinson also had an impressive offensive showing turning in a 3-for-5 day, with a pair of triples, driving in five runs.
In the top of the third, senior Rhett Maynard would drive in a run on an RBI triple into right-centerfield gap. Back-to-back RBI singles from West Texas A&M commits DH Corbin Langham and 1B Brett Williams would give Amarillo a 4-0 lead through three innings of play.
In the bottom half of the third Coronado would strike for five runs, that started on a two-run RBI triple from uncommitted sophomore RF Charlie Robinson that would give the Mustangs their first runs of the ballgame. Another RBI triple from senior 1B Landry Watson, would give Coronado a 5-4 lead going into the fourth. In the fifth, Coronado would pick up where they left off in the fourth, scoring two runs on an RBI triple from Midland College commit 3B Caden Hensley, who scored on a defensive miscue for an inside-the-park-homerun. The Mustangs would scratch for two more on a pair of RBI singles from Charlie Robinson and Midland College signee SS Zack Swindell putting Coronado in front, 9-4.
Rhett Maynard would pick up his second hit of the game on a clutch bases clearing three-run RBI triple, that would reclaim the lead for Amarillo in the fifth, 10-9. Coronado would strike back in the bottom half of the inning on an inside-the-park-homerun from senior CF Cameron Stevenson tying the game at 10 apiece.
In the top half of the sixth, Eastern Oklahoma State College signee LF Jeb Jenkins would start the scoring on an RBI double to right field. Continued offensive productivity would come from Maynard on two-run RBI double, with uncommitted junior 3B Memo Frausto following in order driving in two runs on a single to the left-side. The Sandies would score seven runs in the sixth ultimately securing the victory, with ten of their runs coming via base-on-balls or hit-by-pitch. With the win Amarillo advances to 17-6 overall and sitting in first place at 9-1 in district.
More on Amarillo: Amarillo is arguably the strongest team in the West Texas area, with a line-up that features five college committed players, with a couple of underclassmen at the top of the order in junior 3B Memo Frausto and sophomore RF Jake Maynard that are likely to be on few recruiting boards very soon. Coach Randon Johnson features a bullpen with some big-time arms in junior Wichita State commit LHP Coby Bolen (No. 97 in the PBR 2020 class rankings, and No. 9 ranked LHP), senior Weatherford College commit LHP Karson Kite, and junior RHP Spencer Thurman to help anchor a high-powered offense.

Rhett Maynard, SS, Amarillo, 2019
The TCU commit has an athletic, muscular frame at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds. Maynard showcased why is he arguably the best overall player in the area Tuesday night with an impressive hitting performance. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open athletic stance, short stride, quick hands with loose finish, great barrel awareness, showcased gap-to-gap power driving balls into both gaps for triples, showed flashes of pop to the pull side on a double down the line. Likely to be factor for the Frogs next season.
