TEAM OUTLOOK
Coach Martin Dean and The Colony Cougars look to make it back into the 5A postseason in 2024, after just missing out last season. The Cougars expect their pitching to be the team’s biggest strength in 2024 after returning three pitchers who were worthy of All-District recognition in 2023.
Leading things off for the returning pitchers for The Colony is Cisco JC commit RHP Wesley Peck (2024). Peck is currently ranked No. 153 in the state and was First Team All-District last season. A Second Team All-District pitcher returns this season in senior RHP JD Clarke (uncommitted). After earning District Newcomer of the Year last season, expect big things again in 2024 from sophomore RHP/INF Trey Rangel. Rangel was a Future Games participant this past summer for Prep Baseball, and is currently ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 10 nationally. At the Future Games, Rangel was one of the biggest winner’s from the event, where he was 90-92 mph with his fastball and spun a curveball at 3000+ rpm. Rangel is just starting to scratch the surface of what he could accomplish in high school and will be a must-follow throughout the spring and for years to come.
Senior C/INF Caden Degele (uncommitted) is back in 2024 after earning Honorable Mention All-District last season, and should be a strong battery mate for the three arms mentioned above. A pair of junior outfielders return this year as well in OF/1B Shawn Keenen (uncommitted) and OF German Pulido (uncommitted). Sophomore 1B/LHP Josiah Rojas is also returning this season after having a strong freshman varsity campaign in 2023. Rojas is currently ranked No. 66 in the state, and was a winner at our Top Prospect Games South Texas where he impressed both on the mound and at the plate, working his fastball up to 83.5 mph and posting a max exit velocity of 94 mph at the event.
Three juniors are projected to join the fold for the Cougars in 2024 in RHP/UTL Cole Richeson (uncommitted), C/INF Sam Campbell (uncommitted), and INF/RHP Kolton Lang (uncommitted). Two additional newcomers to keep tabs on in 2024 are UTL/RHP Riley Stewart (2026) and Santiago Pereira Arreaza. Freshman RHP/INF Colton Wood is another talented underclassmen to watch in 2024 and beyond as he begins his high school career this spring.
With the quality of pitching and experience they return in 2024, look for the Cougars to get back into postseason contention this season.
