The 2024 Texas high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Atascocita Eagles have nine key returners from a 2023 team that finished as 6A Area Finalists. Coach Jeremy ONeill’s 2024 squad expects to be led by their pitching and defense, behind four returning players who earned All-District honors last season.

Headlining the returning group will be senior RHP Nicholas Baker (San Jac JC), who earned First Team All-District in 2023. Joining Baker as All-District in 2023 are seniors INF/RHP Kaden McCoy (Northwestern State - First Team), C/OF Zach Thomas (Brookhaven JC - First Team), and INF/RHP Johnathan Kent (uncommitted - Second Team). McCoy is currently ranked No. 160 in the state, and was a standout at the South Texas Senior Games last summer. He showed real two-way potential at the event where he had a strong arm in the infield (92 mph) and on the bump as well (86-88 mph). At the plate, McCoy has pop from the left side to the tune of EV’s in the mid 90’s (T95 mph). Being a two-way player, McCoy should be able to make an impact in numerous ways for the Eagles in 2024.

Also returning for Atascocita in 2024 are seniors C Nathan Johnson (Wayland Baptist), OF/LHP Collin Dennis (uncommitted), RHP/INF Haden Braren (uncommitted), and RHP/UTL Braeden Jenkins (Kentucky Christian). Dennis is currently ranked No. 282 in the state and was another standout from the South Texas Senior Games in August, where he showed upside as a two-way player as well. Junior INF/RHP Jayden Hernandez (uncommitted) will also be returning for the Eagles in 2024 and gives Coach ONeill another versatile two-way player to deploy on the diamond.

The Eagles have a lot to be excited about entering 2024 with the pieces they return in the lineup and on the mound. Look for Atascocita to make another 6A playoff run in 2024 and be a tough out all season.
