Unsigned Senior Games: Team Gray Pitcher Analysis

By Doug Hall
Tennessee Director of Scouting

The PBR Tennessee Unsigned Senior Games event took place on September 28 at Rose Park in Nashville.  The event included 35 uncommitted seniors still looking for a place to continue their education and baseball careers.  The following is analysis of all Team Gray pitchers from the event.  This is pitcher analysis only.  Those players who also played a position for Team Black at the event had their position player analysis featured in a previous article.

Christopher Johnson, SS/RHP, LaVergne HS, 2015
5-foot-9, 165-pound prospect was a top performer of the event flashing next level potential in the field and on the mound. Flashed a fastball that sat 81-85 mph with cutting action that he was able to throw for strike after strike, throws a power curve that stayed at 75 mph that has sharp 11/5 action with depth, changeup was second best secondary pitch on the day that was 75-76 mph with arm side fade. As mentioned in previous articles, Johnson is a versatile player with the ability to be an every day position player or wind up on the mound. Should be an interesting career path to follow, committed to Columbia State CC following the event.

J Matthew Osborne, RHP, Hendersonville HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 185 pound prospect opened eyes at the event. Big, strong body type that uses high-3/4 arm slot, stays mostly online but does land open occasionally, generates a heavy 79-83 mph two seam fastball that shows good arm side run when his mechanics are working properly, sharp 11/5 curveball that has tight spin that was at 67-70 mph, changeup still improving but showed promise at 75-76 mph with arm side run, both off-speed pitches are thrown with near fastball arm speed. Has participated in other PBR events and continues to show steady improvement.

Austin Bumbalough, RHP, Farragut HS, 2015
6-foot-3, 195-pound prospect is already a big body with some projectability, uses a short, over the top motion that seems to catch hitters off guard and produces a 78-82 mph fastball that has good arm side run, good secondary pitch arsenal, 12/6 curveball that was inconsistent, but was effective when he was able to control it, throws a split that looked to be his best off-speed offering that has hard tumbling action that he throws at near fastball arm speed and was consistently 68 mph, challenges the zone with all pitches, good rhythm on the mound.

Jacob Wright, LHP, South Gibson Co HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 160-pound prospect though slightly built showed good command and presence on the mound. With a high-3/4 arm slot and short arm action Wright was effective at working the corners of the plate well. Though his fastball sat at 74-77 mph, it shows arm side run and sink, curveball was erratic and stayed mostly up in the zone but effective when down at 62-64 mph with 1/7 shape and good depth, changeup was 65-67 mph with fade and good arm speed, repeatable delivery with good tempo.

Dylan Moore, OF/RHP, South Gibson HS, 2015
5-foot-8, 150-pound athletic prospect who uses short, high-3/4 arm action on the mound, fastball was 81-83 mph with arm side run, inconsistent landing point as he tends to fly open on occasion, got behind hitters and only showed fastball in game play, in warm-ups showed a sharp 11/5 curveball that has late life to it, also showed a change-up that shows arm side fade.

Jordan Durham, OF/1B/LHP, Gallatin HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect with a long, lanky body type. Plenty of room to fill out frame. Throws from an over the top arm slot with long arm action, throws a straight, 76-79 mph fastball, 2/8 curveball that was 66-67 mph, throws a surprising  knuckle ball that sits at 63 mph and can dance pretty good when he throws it correctly. Interesting to see if he can gain better command of it making it a consistently effective pitch.

Austin Brown, OF/LHP, Hendersonville HS, 2015
6-foot, 200-pound prospect uses shorter arm action and works through a high-3/4 arm slot. Fastball was 77-80 mph with good arm-side run, 1/7 curveball with late life and near fastball arm speed at 64-66 mph, also throws a change-up at near fastball arm speed and has arm side action and fade, changeup has some deception with good arm speed.

Fulton Johnson, OF/LHP, Collierville HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect uses over the top arm slot to go with medium arm action from the left hand side, fastball shows arm side run and sits at 75-76 mph, was erratic with his curveball, but it shows tight spin with a 2/8 shape and sat 65-66 mph. Plenty of room to improve mechanics and strength. Minimal effort guy with a smooth rhythm.

Andrew Clark, SS/RHP, Harpeth HS, 2015
5-foot-11, 155-pound prospect uses shorter arm action and a high-3/4 arm slot on the mound, shows good direction with lower half, fastball was straight and 72-75 mph, tended to work up in the zone, curveball shows short break and should continue to develop, strength gains in the weight room should yield increase in velocity.
