The Preseason All-State Showcase took place on February 7 at Showtime Sports Academy in Franklin and proved to be the most talented group of players we have assembled since we began running events in the state in August.
With a total of 25 pitchers who took the mound at the event, we are going to break down the group of pitchers by class. All told, 13 of the 25 pitchers, which consisted mostly of 2016 and 2017 prospects, touched 80 mph or better.
The following is a look at the Class of 2016 pitchers who took the mound for the event. This is pitcher analysis only. Those players who also participated as a position player at the event will have that evaluation featured in a subsequent article.
Winston Cannon, 2016, Upperman HS, RHP
The 6 foot 3, 185-pound RHP has an ideal pitcher’s frame that projects well at the next level, arm is loose and quick, works through a high-3/4 arm slot, also throws a fastball from low-3/4 to sidearm slot, easy effort in delivery, throws a heavy fastball with late arm-side run and sink at 85-86 mph that topped at 87 from the low-3/4 slot, shows a very good curveball that showed late and sharp 11/5 action and ranged from 70-72 mph, showed improved feel for 74-75 mph changeup from previous event, big upside and should continue to develop into high-level prospect.
Noah Sims, 2016, Sycamore HS, RHP
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound RHP showed long arm action with a high-3/4 arm slot, arm shows some quickness, fastball sat 83-84 mph touching 85 on one occasion and shows occasional arm-side run, throws a cutter at 75-77 mph with some late action and a curveball that varied between 12/6 and 11/5 -action at 66-67 mph, showed good command of 70-72 mph changeup, showed some inconsistent command with the curveball but has solid potential to pitch at the next level, frame offers good projection.
Carson McKoon, 2016, McCallie HS, LHP
The 6-foot-2, 184-pound LHP has a good pitcher’s frame with projectability, arm is loose and works well, good pitchability, uses long arm action with a high-3/4 arm slot, McKoon's fastball ranged from 78-79 mph and shows some cutting action, his curveball shows late 1/7 movement and ranged from 67-69 mph, locates the curveball at bottom of the strike zone, showed a cutter with some gradual action to it that ranged from 69-71 mph, changeup ranged from 71-73 mph and he tends to bury it but has the makings of a solid pitch.
Terryn Seaton, 2016, Columbia Central, LHP
The 5-foot-9, 175-pound LHP uses shorter arm action with a high-3/4 to over the top arm slot, Seaton has a fastball that he throws for strikes at the bottom of the zone ranging from 76-78 mph, has an average splitter that ranged from 68-71 mph with some tumbling action, tends to be quick with his lower half on the curveball leaving his arm dragging and the curveball up in the zone, curveball is good when he gets out front with it at 65-66 mph with 12/6 action, showed feel for a solid 67-69 mph changeup that he locates well at the bottom of the zone.
Ben Koffman, 2016, Humboldt HS, RHP
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound RHP with large frame uses long arm action through an over the top arm slot, has a tendency to fall off to the first base side, Koffman showed a straight fastball that ranged from 77-78 mph touching 80 on one occasion, shows some feel for his curveball with 12/6 action that sat 65-67 mph, 72-74 mph changeup is thrown with good arm action but needs to continue to develop some feel for the pitch.
Brandon Jackson , 2016, Knoxville Central, RHP
The 6 foot 1 ,180-pound RHP uses long arm action with a high-3/4 arm slot, didn’t show as good of command on this occasion but have seen it from him in the past, fastball was straight at 76-78 mph (have seen up to 82), his curveball showed late 11/5 action at times and ranged from 67-68 mph, throws his 71-73 mph changeup with good arm speed, changeup is mainly straight.
