Left-handed hitting catchers with ability are typically a sought after commodity at the college level, or any level for that matter. Christ Presbyterian Academy sophomore Philip Clarke appears to be headed toward being one of those coveted guys.
Clarke showed a good combination of offensive and defensive ability at the Preseason All-State Showcase last month, impressing especially with his bat.
In what was one of the most impressive batting practice rounds of the event, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound left-handed hitter showed good bat speed as he routinely squared the baseball with a barrage of line drives. The baseball jumps off his bat, and he shows power that should only continue to further develop as he progresses through his high school career. In addition, he showed above average speed for the catcher position with a 7.22 60-yard dash.
Defensively, Clarke showed good receiving skills and blocking ability. He is an athletic presence behind the plate who showed 75 mph arm strength from the crouch with pop times that ranged from 1.96-2.08. He showed good footwork and direction on his throws to the bag with a quick glove to hand transfer, and as he continues to add arm strength, he should develop into a high-level catch-and-throw guy behind the plate.
Look for Clarke to help lead the Lions, both behind the plate, and in the middle of the lineup this spring.
