MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Open + Rising Stars showcase were both held on Tuesday, July 12th at Patriot Bank Park on the campus of Collierville HS. This event was an open event that consisted of roughly 20 prospects from the 2023-2027 classes. These players went through a pro-style workout and took batting practice using Trackman and Blast Motion to record hitting metrics. Pitchers were able to throw bullpens and were able to get numbers and metrics off of our Trackman unit, such as pitch velocity, spin rate, horizontal & vertical movement & much more. There were some players who showed up and continued to build off of prior performances, but there were also some new names who jumped onto our radar with a strong showing on Tuesday.
Kicking off our post-event coverage for these events, we take a look back at some of the top performers and standouts from the each day. Continuing over the course of the next week or so, we will release Statistical Leaderboards for the event then transition into releasing individual scouting reports for each player in attendance.
Quick Hits:
Matthew Autry, OF/2B, Collierville, 2023
Uncommitted, 5-foot-7, 165-lb compact frame w/ athleticism and lower half strength. Crouched stance w/ coil leg kick and compact hand load. Generates above average bat speed and does a good job getting on plane with his timing. Heavy dose of line drives and barrels w/ pull side approach. Defensively, profiles as a utility guy w/ strong run tool (6.99 sixty). Solid actions on the infield, average footwork, but presents the glove early and trusts the hands. Clean transfers and above average arm strength. Moves well in the outfield, getting behind the ball and long loose arm action w/ carry on throws.
Rocco Geritano, OF, Pope John Paul II, 2024
Uncommitted, 6-0, 165-lb lean, wiry frame w/ high waist and room to add strength. Showed some quick twitch, posting a 6.94 sixty, and handled the bat from the left side. Tall, backloaded stance w/ hands by the ear. Gliding stride w/ compact load, getting the barrel on plane early and often. Generates below average bat speed, but rotates well and consistently barrels up the baseball w/ middle to LCF gap approach. Defensively, light feet covering ground and getting behind the ball, strong gather w/ short arm action and above average arm strength.
Julian Jarrett, SS/OF, Haywood, 2023
Uncommitted, 5-10, 175-lb proportional frame w/ athleticism and lower half strength. Tall, balanced stance w/ relaxed hands and small leg kick. Minimal hand load and upright bat on foot strike while generating slightly below average bat speed, but stays balanced working gap to gap w/ line drive approach. Defensively, active feet working around the ball w/ very solid hands and clean transfers. Short, compact arm action w/ average arm strength and good hand speed. In the outfield, moved well (7.35 sixty) tracking down baseballs, similar quick arm actions w/ solid carry on throws.
Kenny Cox, C, Evangelical Christian, 2023
Uncommitted, 6-0, 200-lb developed frame w/ present strength throughout. Open crouched stance w/ big leg kick and quiet hand load. Heavy dose of hard contact w/ pull side approach and power (T 94.8 exit; T 366 ft). Looks to get the head out and drive the ball with authority. Defensively, varied stances from traditional to one knee setup. Soft hands, working up thru the ball and showed strike stealing ability as a receiver. Solid arm strength, but quick clean transfers getting the ball out and on target consistently (T 2.03 pop). Well rounded uncommitted senior, who is a reliable defender and shows power upside.
Elijah DeBerry, RHP, Univ. School of Jackson, 2024
Uncommitted, 6-foot-4, 245-lb large, developed frame w/ present strength and physicality. Quiet feet in delivery w/ strong balance point and tall n fall lower half. Glides down the mound w/ square to slightly closed foot landing and blocks with the lead leg. Long, loose arm action, getting it up on foot landing and works up to H 3/4 slot. FB at 85-87 w/ high spin (T 2436 rpm) and great carry thru the zone (19.8 IVB). Pounded the zone, locating and ability to beat barrels up. Manipulates shape of the breaking ball but profiles best as SL at 71-76. Sharp bite and 10/4 action w/ elevated spin rates (T 2478 rpm). Located for strikes and looks to be a true put away pitch, to extend the zone or bury for chase. CH at 74-77 is solid third offering, w/ slight fade and keeps it down in the zone.
Jack Hibbard, RHP/SS, Arlington, 2024
Uncommitted, 6-foot-1, 150-lb lean, wiry frame w/ plenty of projection. Flashes of two-way upside, but really stood out on the mound. Repeatable, simple delivery, working smoothly down the mound w/ controlled tempo. Long, quick arm working up to 3/4 slot and closed foot landing. Pounded the zone w/ FB at 83-84 w/ good spin (T 2352 rpm) and slight arm side life. Mixed sharp CB at 67-70 w/ great shape and ability to land for strikes. 11/5 action that tunnels well off the FB and put away pitch potential. Above average CH at 71-74 w/ good deception and fade from LHH. Great feel for the pitch, getting depth to land for strikes or swing n miss. Positionally, very sound footwork and great glove presentation. Soft hands and crisp transfers, throwing from various slot w/ arm strength. At the plate, Balanced, slightly open stance w/ quiet hands and toe tap side. Generates above average bat speed w/ good rotation and on plane often. Gap to gap approach w/ consistent line drives and power to project as he adds strength.
