McHenry Preseason I.D.: Statistical Analysis
January 30, 2019
The fourth annual McHenry Preseason I.D. was hosted Sunday Jan. 27 at Pro Player Academy in McHenry, IL. The event saw over 100 prospects lace up the turfs and participate in a pro-style workout in front of the PBR Illinois Scouting Staff. There were over 40 prospects from each of the Sophomore and Junior class and over 30 prospects from the incoming Freshman class, this giving us a chance to see a myriad of talent of all ages from the Northern part of the state.
Today, we’ll continue our event coverage by dissecting the showcase’s statistical standouts. Our events' Quick Hits post was recently published providing a snap shot of some of the top performers in attendance. Keep an eye out in the coming weeks when we break down the day’s performers, position by position.
Carson Roberts (Wheaton North, 2020) saw his name in all three of the possible charts for an outfielder. Roberts ran the event-best Home to First time (3.94) being the only to crack the sub-4 second mark, topped the outfield velocity chart (87 mph), and tied for fourth in exit velocity (90 mph). The two-sport prep athlete has the pure physical makeup to be a potential threat in whichever sport he chooses to play moving forward.
Mikal Ashley (Grant, 2020) was in and near the top of three categories as well, those being Fastball Velocity (1st at 83 mph), Exit Velocity (T-1st at 95 mph) and Infield Velocity (3rd at 85 mph). Ashley has a real chance to be a threat at the plate and on the mound heading in to his Junior season.
Jack Owens (Mascoutah, 2020) and Maxwell Thompson (Warren Township, 202) tied for first along with Ashley in the exit velocity testing all seeing the gun register 95 mph. Brandon Jernigan finished a tick behind leaders in exit velo registering at 94 mph and also headlined the infield velocity testing topping 89 mph across the diamond. This trio of physical right-handed bats should all provide a power punch for their perspective prep schools this spring.
Illinois commit Camden Janik (Wauconda, 2021) and Jake Masini (Prairie Ridge, 2020) each claimed a first place finish in the two defensive catching categories. Janik had the best pop time at 2 seconds flat and Masini tied Janik in catcher velocity at 81 mph down to second.
