Game Report: Grace Christian @ Rhea County

On Saturday night, Grace Christian Academy in Knoxville traveled to Rhea County to play the final game of the Rhea County play day. This was the second game for both teams. This began as a nice night and then temperatures dropped into the 30's once the sun set, creating an interesting environment for hitters and pitchers. Here is a look at some standouts (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights!):
Grace Christian Academy Hitters
Landon Crumbley 3B / RHP / Grace Christian - Knoxville, TN / 20206’4 third basemen stood out, as he homered in the final inning of the game before this one. Tall, athletic frame w/ long limbs, lanky frame. Projectable. Offensively, hits w/ a slightly open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into stride to open w/ proper load. Near arm bar. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft. Projectable power ceiling. Made all the plays at third base, showed off above average arm strength. |
Cody Estep OF / Grace Christian - Knoxville, TN / 2018Uncommitted OF showed clean swing. Short, athletic frame w/ some present strength, some physical projection. Hits from a straight on, crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into shift of weight, toe tap and load. Clean, repeatable swing projects for gap power. Was not tested defensively. |
Noah Gent SS / 3B / Grace Christian Academy, TN / 2019Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 3
SS continues to show above average bat ceiling for a middle infielder. Medium, physical frame w/ present strength in the lower half, some projection. Offensively, hits w/ a straight on, crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into shift of weight, leg kick and load. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft. Hammered a ball foul. Projects to hit w/ projectable power. Defensively, showed soft hands w/ solid lateral quickness. |
Rhea County Hitters
Keaton Ray OF / LHP / Rhea County, TN / 2021OF had a strong game, collecting 2 hits w/ a walk and zero swing and miss. Medium, athletic frame, lean w/ little present strength, projectable. Offensively, hits w/ an open, crouched stance w/ hand rhythm into knee to knee leg kick w/ proper load. Generates bat speed through the zone. Lot of line drives to all fields. Projectable pull power. Was not tested in the OF. |
Grace Christian Pitchers
Hunter Ferguson RHP / OF / Grace Christian - Knoxville, TN / 2019FB (81-83), CB (64-69), CH (76-78) 3 pitch righty pounded the zone in his 1 inning of work, striking out 2. Medium, physical frame w/ strong lower half, close to mature frame. Pitches from a full wind-up in repeatable delivery and over the top release. Straight FB shows occasional cut. Big downer CB w/ proper rotation, late bite. CH w/ arm-speed, fade and sink. Feel for the zone w/ all 3, any pitch in any count. 1 swing and miss on 6 swings. |
Ty Hutchinson RHP / Grace Christian - Knoxville, TN / 2020FB (81-83, T84, 85), CB (68), CH (73) 3 pitch righty struck out the side with no hitter making contact on any swing (4 of 4 swing and miss). Medium, athletic frame w/ present lower half strength, projectable. Pitches from a full wind-up w/ over the top release. Quick arm. Straight FB flashes ride through the zone. Medium downer CB. CH w/ sink. Threw the fastball for strikes, developing w/ the off-speed stuff. |
Rhea County Pitchers
Baylor Dulaney RHP / Rhea County, TN / 2018FB (79-82, T83, 84), CB (68-72) Uncommitted righty struck out 5 over 4 innings. 6’5, athletic frame w/ present strength in lower half, projectable. Prototypical pitcher build. Pitches w/ a full wind-up into high ¾ to ¾ release. Rock and fire delivery. Extension to the plate allows FB to play up. Mostly straight, flashes life on occasion (run and sink at times, cut at times), inconsistent. Medium 12-6 downer comes up out of hand, feel for throwing it for a strike. DNS CH. Around the zone. 11 swing and misses on 30 swings. |
Ross Pendergrass RHP / OF / Rhea County, TN / 2020Rankings StateRank: 30 / POS: 10
FB (77-82, T83), CB (68-70) Righty fired 3 hitless innings. Prototypical pitcher frame w/ some present strength, lot of projection. Pitches from a full wind-up into an over the top release w/ some head violence. Learning to repeat timing of delivery to compensate for quick arm. Tendency to pull the baseball. FB features heavy run and sink. Medium downer CB w/ tight rotation, proper shape. Flashes. DNS CH. Projects to control as gets more comfortable w/ delivery. 5 swing and misses on 14 swings. |
