Game Report: Dyersburg @ Covington

On Monday, Dyersburg traveled to Covington to play a varsity and jv doubleheader. This was a cloudy day w/ a heavy wind blowing out to LF. Here is a look at some standouts (check out the Twitter feed for some video highlights):

Covington Hitters

Austin Baskin SS / 3B / Covington, TN / 2019

Rankings StateRank: 20 / POS: 2

Memphis commit. All-around player showed bat speed offensively w/ arm strength and soft hands defensively. 5’10, 175-pounder w/ lean strength, some physical projection. Offensively, hits from a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ short, controlled hand rhythm into proper stride and load. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ natural loft. Up the middle approach w/ lot of line drives. Pull HR power w/ gap to gap ability. Defensively, features soft hands w/ projectable above average arm strength w/ carry through target. Glove tapper w/ some length in his release.

Kyle Ginn OF / C / Covington , TN / 2019

Uncommitted OF/C showed some bat speed through the zone. 5’10, 185-pounder w/ present lower half strength, some physical projection. Hits from an open, crouched stance w/ short bat waggle into stride to slightly open, proper load. Flashes bat speed through the zone. Gap to gap power w/ developing pull power. 4.47 down the line from right side. Was not tested in the OF. Caught late in the varsity doubleheader. Developing catcher learning to receive, can present an early target.

Rob Hendren 1B / Covington, TN / 2019

Uncommitted cleanup hitter showed his pull power, going 2-4 w/ a triple. 6’0, 210-pounder features close to mature frame w/ physicality. Offensively, hits in a straight on, slightly crouched stance w/ bat resting on back shoulder into proper stride and load. Pull oriented approach w/ HR power. Flashes bat speed through the zone. Was not tested at 1B.

Cole Howard C / Covington, TN / 2018

Southwest Tennessee commit. Intriguing catcher had a strong day at the plate, going 2-3 w/ a home run. 5’7, 165-pounder features athletic frame w/ lean strength. Offensively, hits from a slightly open, upright stance w/ some hand rhythm into a leg kick w/ proper load. Will toe tap or stride at times. Generates bat speed through the zone w/ barrel feel. Up the middle approach w/ lot of lines drives. Pull HR power. 4.63 down the line on infield single. Defensively, handles a staff w/ 2 premium fastball life arms. Can work on presenting an early target and maintaining that target for his arms. Athletic receiver moves well behind the plate. Soft hands w/ idea of framing. Quick feet as a thrower w/ arm strength w/ carry to target.

Brock Lomax OF / Covington, TN / 2019

Above average runner underway picked up a double on this day, going 2-5. 6’0, 170-pounder features medium, athletic frame w/ lean strength, projectable. Offensively, hits in a straight on, upright stance w/ very short bat waggle into short leg kick and load. Up the middle approach w/ lot of line drives. Gap power w/ developing home run power. Leadoff hitter and catalyst. 4.38 and 4.46 down the line from the right side. Was not tested in the OF.

Weston Martin 3B / Covington, TN / 2019

First look at Martin and he had a strong day, going 3-4 w/ 2 doubles and a home run. 5’9, 165-pounder looks taller than listed height. Athletic frame w/ lean strength, some physical projection. Offensively, hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ short bat waggle into leg kick and proper load. Flashes bat speed through the zone. Pull oriented approach w/ developing pull power. Stood out defensively, featuring an above average glove w/ solid feet, arm strength w/ carry to target.

Brennan McClain OF / Covington, TN / 2018

Uncommitted senior had a strong day, going 3-4 w/ a double. 6’0, 175-pounder w/ athletic frame, some present lower half strength. Hits w/ an open stance w/ some hand rhythm into toe tap and proper load. Occasional leg kick, occasional stride. Up the middle approach w/ some barrel feel. Lot of line drives. Gap power. Was not tested defensively.

Covington Pitchers

Christian Delashmit RHP / 1B / Covington , TN / 2019

Max FB: 89, FB (84-87), CB (72-75), CH (74-76)

Tennessee commit flashed 3 above average pitches. 6’4, 189-pounder w/ dream frame. Prototypical pitcher build w/ lot of projection, hasn’t scratched his physical potential. Pitches from ¾ release in repeatable delivery w/ low effort throw. FB showed consistent above average arm-side run. CB flashed above average w/ tight rotation, above average depth, late bite. CH w/ arm-speed fade and sink. Around the zone w/ his FB, showed some expected rust on off-speed command. Projects to command w/ low effort throw, repeatable mechanics. 5 swing and misses on 10 swings (50 %), including 3 of 3 on his off-speed pitches.

Ty Warmath RHP / 2B / Covington, TN / 2019

Max FB: 86, FB (83-86), CB (69-73), CH (74-76)

Memphis commit flashed 3 above average pitches, striking out 4 of the 7 hitters he faced. 5’10, 160-pounder features athletic frame w/ physical projection. Pitches from ¾ release w/ repeatable, well-tempo’d delivery, upright finish. FB showed consistent above average arm-side run, some sink. CB flashed plus w/ late bite, average depth. Tight. Drops slot slightly on CH, shows above average sink w/ arm-speed. Around the zone w/ all 3, projects to command. 7 swing and misses on 11 swings (64 %).

Dyersburg Hitter

Connor Greer 2B / OF / Dyersburg, TN / 2018

First look at the senior, showed interesting tools at the top of the order, going 1-2 w/ a walk and double. 5’7, 140-pounder features short, athletic frame w/ little present strength. Offensively, hits from a closed stance w/ slight crouch and bat waggle into toe tap and short load. Proper bat path, short to the ball. Singles hitter relies on hitting gaps and using above average run speed underway to leg out extra base hits. Defensively, profiles best at 2B w/ reliable hands, arm strength w/ carry to target.
