The PBR Tennessee Fall Top Prospect Games event took place at Lipscomb University on November 1 and afforded close to 60 players the opportunity to showcase their abilities in a combination showcase/game play event. Despite abnormally chilly conditions, some solid performances were turned in as some players established themselves as potential high-level prospects.
Below we take an in depth look at the group of corner infielders that participated on Team White during the event. This is position player analysis only. Those players who also pitched at the event will have their pitching analysis featured in a separate article.
Jake Grooms, 1B/RHP, R/R, Farragut, 2017
6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect is a big, strong body type. Jake is a balanced stance hitter who flashes power potential, gets bat through the hitting zone with good extension, 84 mph exit velocity, short stride, shows arm bar tendency, good lower half torque, ball can jump off bat when he squares it up, ran 4.88 home to first, went 0-for-3 in game play. Uses short arm action from the high- ¾ arm slot, accurate throws, 73 mph arm velocity, good instincts, shows soft hands and good footwork around the bag, clean exchange, sets feet well on throws. Good projectabilty with power potential.
Robert Worley, 1B/RHP, L/R, Dyesrburg, 2016
6-foot-3, 215-pound prospect has a big strong frame. Worley flashes potential with a power swing that starts from an open stance, short stride, good lower half, good balance, short, slightly uphill swing path, can drive the ball on a line when he squares it up, 87 mph bat exit velocity, showed some speed for size with 4.46 home to first time, went 0-for-4 in game play. Shows hesitant instincts in the field, long arm action from the ¾ arm slot, 76 mph arm velocity, accurate throws. Size and power bat potential gives Worley some next level projectability as a position player.
Nathan Clark, 3B/RHP, R/R Farragut, 2016
6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect has an athletic frame. Hits from an open stance, shows good load, rhythm and balance, flashes line drive ability with a gap to gap approach, 79 mph bat velocity, ran 4.78 home to first time, went 0-for-3 in game play. Shows quick instincts in the field, uses short arm action, high- ¾ arm slot, quick, clean release, 74 mph arm velocity, above average hands, plays through the ball. Shows some projectability.
Ryan Lyle, 3B/RHP, R/R, Goodpasture, 2017
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, quiet load, short stride, good balance, shows line drive ability with a gap to gap approach, went 0-for-3 in game play. Needs to continue to improve 70 mph bat exit velocity. Shows good defensive instincts, clean exchange, ¾ arm slot with short arm action. Young player who should continue to improve.
