JUPITER, FL - Lots of players made declarative statements on Day 2 of the World Wood Bat Championship, much of which is highlighted in our expansive coverage from National Supervisor Nathan Rode (The Rode Show) and National Crosschecker Shooter Hunt (On the Hunt).
As for me, over the course of 14 hours of baseball I watched Friday, RHP Landon Leach (Pickering HS, ON) was the big winner. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound uncommitted 2017 right-hander started for the loaded Toronto Blue Jays Scout Team and dominated in impressive fashion. Leach came out the gates sitting 92-93 mph with his fastball that showed some late arm-side life when down in the zone. Leach held his velocity throughout his outing, while also showcasing an 81-84 mph slider that had varying degrees of action.
At one point, Leach struck out four straight, and he finished with seven punchouts in 3.2 innings. He also walked three and yielded three hits in the rout of the Dallas Patriots. For his size, Leach’s arm is athletic and loose, and he appears to have refined some of his mechanics since the PBR Ontario ProCase in May and the Under Armour Classic in June. Most noticeably, at the previous events, Leach had worked exclusively out of the stretch. On Friday, he pitched out of the windup, and looked comfortable doing so.
Ranked No. 27 overall, Leach is the highest ranked uncommitted prospect in the 2017 class. Aside from the college attention, he also made a strong draft statement as a high-follow leading up to next June.
