The final week of the season will kick off tomorrow with the 2022 Spring Fling in Murfreesboro. Last week, we ranked the 16 remaining clubs in each classification and this week our list continues to trim down. For 1A-4A rankings, we saw only 8 of the top 8 teams per class (32 teams total) bow out during the sectional round, so it will be a highly competitive field in each class this week. Below, we'll preview each class
2022 Class Rankings
1A Preview
Eagleville has established themselves as a clear front runner, plus they will be playing at home in the upper bracket. Coalfield looks to be the biggest challenger on that side with Bradford and Lookout Valley rounding out that side. The bottom bracket will be very tricky to navigate as they all have comparable records and are sandwiched at #3-6 in the class rankings. Prov's Prediction: Final Four- Eagleville, Coalfield, Gordonsville, and Univ. School-JC. Championship: Eagleville over Gordonsville.
1A Rankings: 5/23
1. Eagleville (33-2)
2. Coalfield (27-10)
3. Univ. School-JC (24-11)
4. Gordonsville (24-12)
5. Peabody (22-11)
6. McKenzie (23-6)
7. Lookout Valley (14-16)
8. Bradford (17-19)
2A Preview
Pigeon Forge has been a force at the top of the rankings going wire-to wire this season and seem to be on a mission after finishing runner up last season. However, this has shaped up to be a very good field with quality clubs who can push "The Forge." The Upper bracket is very balanced with probably Watertown as a slight favorite as they return to Spring Fling, but Loretto and Loudon have state tourney experience with appearances in 2019. The lower bracket is highlighted by Pigeon Forge, but Forrest and Riverside should expect to be a great matchup to set the tone. White House Heritage is making their first state tourney appearance and have played really well down the stretch, so don't count out the Patriots. Prov's Prediction: Final Four- Loretto, Watertown, Pigeon Forge, and Forrest. Championship: Pigeon Forge over Watertown
2A Rankings: 5/23
1. Pigeon Forge (37-3)
2. Watertown (25-9)
3. Forrest (25-9)
4. Adamsville (24-6)
5. Loretto (23-10)
6. Decatur Co-Riverside (25-13)
7. Loudon (25-11)
8. White House Heritage (19-10)
3A Preview
It's safe to say that the top two seeds may be cursed after Hardin County and Carter lost in the region semifinals then newly appointed #1/#2 Lenoir City and Jackson Southside lost in sectionals. I've said it before but the new look 3A is the most wide open field and could be considered the Wild Wild West in predictions. Tennessee High enters as the #1 team after an impressive week, but I think you could argue for many of these teams to be #1. Tennessee vs Tullahoma will be a tone setter in the upper bracket while Covington has played extremely well and a hot streaking Montgomery Central has pitching depth to make runs. More balance in the lower bracket with Upperman as a slight favorite, but South Gibson County and Sullivan East right behind them with Munford showing flashes of taking down big clubs. This is a coin flip class with plenty of teams who can hoist the trophy at the end of the week. Prov's Prediction: Final Four- Tullahoma, Tennessee, Upperman, Sullivan East. Championship: Upperman over Tullahoma.
3A Rankings: 5/23
1. Tennessee (27-9)
2. Upperman (27-9)
3. South Gibson Co. (26-11)
4. Tullahoma (26-13)
5. Sullivan East (24-9)
6. Covington (18-13)
7. Munford (25-14)
8. Montgomery Central (16-18)
4A Preview
The biggest class will boast a deep field of clubs who have consistently been towards the top of rankings. 7 of the 8 clubs opened the year in the top 13 for 4A rankings with 5 in the top 8. Collierville and Houston have went back and forth for #1 spot while Farragut has sat at #2 for a majority of the season. In the upper bracket, Collierville will be the front runner due to their pitching depth, but a youthful Farragut club and the veteran Hendersonville team will push. Riverdale has a tall task opening with the Dragons, but they've been great down the stretch after a rocky start to the year. Houston and Stewarts Creek will be the favorites in the bottom bracket. Powell has played well nearly sweeping last week, but went on the road to Science Hill and won after being walked off by Farragut on Wednesday. Centennial has been undervalued all season, hand up on this one as the Cougars have done nothing but win the big games. Their record isn't the sexiest but they have a true ace and impressively handled Mt. Juliet in the sectional, so don't sleep on the 8th ranked Cougars. Prov's Prediction: Final Four- Collierville, Farragut, Houston, Stewarts Creek. Championship: Collierville over Houston.
4A Rankings: 5/23
1. Collierville (37-9)
2. Farragut (26-11)
3. Houston (35-8)
4. Stewarts Creek (28-7)
5. Hendersonville (29-9)
6. Riverdale (24-15)
7. Powell (27-5)
8. Centennial (20-14)
D2-A Preview
Exciting field for the D2-A state tourney as the top four clubs took care of business in the semifinals. The four remaining programs have shared the field a grand total of one time this season (GCA defeated Goodpasture 9-4 in Middle Region Championship on May 10th). The unfamiliarity between the clubs and the impressive overall resumes should create a wide open field, which come down to who plays the game in Murfreesboro. Goodpasture continues to revenge tour after going 0-2 in the Middle Region last season, but returned a deep roster of bats and arms. Grace Christian Academy is the only team with a win against any of these clubs (9-4 over Goodpasture on May 10th), and they've absolutely mashed the baseball even given their smaller home park. Silverdale is another club with a deep lineup and a true ace and solid secondary pitching options, who ran through the East Region and took 2 of 3 against a good Trinity club. Northpoint has a stout 1-2 punch on the mound with James Smith and Hudson Brown and are the only returning club from 2021 after finishing runner up. Goodpasture gets the nod as the #1 team and will face #3 Silverdale Baptist and #2 Grace Christian will take on #4 Northpoint in the opening round. Prov's Championship Prediction: GCA over Goodpasture
D2-AA Rankings: 5/23 Update
1. Goodpasture (38-4)
2. Grace Christian Aca. (36-5)
3. Silverdale Baptist (32-5)
4. Northpoint (27-9)
D2-AA Preview
The Baylor School is looking to make it four straight state championships ('18, '19, '21) after opening the season #1 in the Power 25 Rankings and heading into Spring Fling they will be facing many familiar faces. The East Region sent 3 of 4 clubs to Murfreesboro with Knoxville Catholic and McCallie joining the Red Raiders. Knoxville Catholic has been a blend of pitching and offensive prowess with some high end commits. McCallie impressed in their two game sweep of CPA and they'll have some high caliber arms to compete with anyone. The outsider is Lipscomb Academy, who came out of the Middle Region as the four seed, and although they weren't highly seeded they have a deep roster and finished half a game out of first in the regular season. It should be a very competitive field with plenty of big time college commits and intriguing matchups. All three clubs have shown good pitching depth and the ability to put runs on the board. #1 Baylor will open up with rival #4 McCallie and #2 Lipscomb Academy will face off with #3 Knoxville Catholic. Prov's Championship Prediction: Baylor over Lipscomb Academy
D2-AA Rankings: 5/23 Update
1. Baylor (22-7)
2. Lipscomb Academy (26-11)
3. Knoxville Catholic (25-12)
4. McCallie (24-12)
