Statistical Analysis: South Charlotte Panther Workout
November 9, 2020
PBR was in attendance at Mountain Island Charter on Sunday November 1st for a workout being held by the South Charlotte Panther organziation. The Panthers held the open workout to identify players for potential roster spots in the 2021 season. Prep Baseball Report was brought in to help organize and run the day, as well as collect stats on the players in the workout.
The day was broken into two workouts. The first session saw 2022 and 2023 graduates go through a modified pro-style workout. Position players ran a laser timed 60, took multiple rounds of live BP, recorded an exit velocity off of a tee in the cages, and worked out from one defensive position. The second session saw a very similar routine with players from the 2024 and 2025 grad classes. At the conclusion of each workout, pitchers threw a very brief bullpen for coaches and scouts to get a glimpse at overall stuff.
Below are the leaders from several areas statistics were collected. CLICK HERE to see the full roster and complete list of stats collected.

THE 60 YARD DASH
Players ran a laser timed 60 yard dash during the offensive workout. The 60 was run on the artificial grass surface at Mountain Island Charter. The surface played true throughout the course of the 60 yards. Ninety players recorded a time in the 60 with median run time of 7.51.

CATCHER POP TIMES & POSITIONAL VELOCITY
In the pro-style workout, catchers workout from behind home plate, making multiple throws to 2B, simulating a stolen base attempt. Scouts again are looking for a quick, clean transition to the release as well as carry and accuracy on the throw. For catchers, evaluators will put a stopwatch on the “pop time” or the time the ball hits their glove to the time the ball hits the MIF’s glove at 2B. Coaches can also time the transition from when the ball hits the catchers glove to when he is able to release his throw. PBR scouts add the radar gun to put a number on the arm strength out of the crouched position.

EXIT VELOCITY (Off of a tee)
During BP, players were able to spend time in the cages working on their swing. One station included an exit velocity off of a tee. Players worked off of a tee, working to center balls off the barrel, producing a top exit speed on a radar gun. Below are the top performers from each session.

Positional VELOCITY
Infielders and Outfielders worked out from their positions making throws that worked to simulate a game like opportunity. During the 1st session, each player made a minimum of 4 throws from their specified position. In session II, due to some time constraints, not all numbers were verified. Those numbers that were verified are included in the overall statistics. Below are the overall leaders from the day from the Infield and Outfield spots.
