SBA Spring Organizational Day: Statistical Breakdown
June 15, 2021
On Saturday June 12th through Monday June 14th PBR of NC was on hand at Noel Williams Park in Monroe, NC for the SBA Organization Scout Day. Saturday started with players going through a modified pro-style workout which included BP on the field, a laser timed 60, and position players getting their arm velocities measured. The workouts were broken up into three sessions based on the player's grad year. After the workouts the SBA teams squared off against each other in scrimmage games with pitchers facing live hitters. During this PBR was able to record velocities on the pitchers as well as gather information on how the hitters handled live pitching and see them play defense in live situations. Below we begin to look at some of the numbers recorded with more notes coming in the next few days on some of the players who stood out during workouts and game play.
By the Numbers
- 13 players ran a 7.20 60 on the lasers
- 6.55 was the top 60 recorded
- 10 Infield arms were recorded at 81 mph or better
- 88 mph was the top arm across the diamond
- 10 Outfield arms reached 80mph or better
- 91 mph was the top outfield velocity
- 6 Catchers threw 76 mph or better to second base
- 6 Catchers had pop times of 2.10 or better
- 81 mph was the top catcher arm velocity
- 1.99 was the best pop time recorded
- 10 Pitchers touched 85 mph or higher
- 88 mph was the top fastball
Statistical Leaders
THE 60 YARD DASH
Players ran a laser timed 60 on the natural surface.
POSITIONAL VELOCITY – INFIELDERS
Infielders were able to workout at shortstop throwing across the infield, or from 1B throwing to 2B and 3B in the pro-style workout. Coaches are working to evaluate rhythm, footwork, hands, exchanges, arm action, accuracy, and carry. To measure arm strength PBR Scouts utilize a radar gun. Below are the top posted positional velocities from the day.
POSITIONAL VELOCITY – OUTFIELDERS
Outfielders received a fly ball or ground ball while making a throw across the outfield with a radar gun measuring their arm velocity.
CATCHER POP TIMES & POSITIONAL VELOCITY
In the pro-style workout, catchers workout from behind home plate, making multiple throws to 2B, simulating a stolen base attempt. Scouts again are looking for a quick, clean transition to the release as well as carry and accuracy on the throw. For catchers, evaluators will put a stopwatch on the “pop time” or the time the ball hits their glove to the time the ball hits the MIF’s glove at 2B. Coaches can also time the transition from when the ball hits the catchers glove to when he is able to release his throw. PBR scouts add the radar gun to put a number on the arm strength out of the crouched position.
Fastball Velocity
Pitchers faced lived hitters in scrimmage games with their arm velocities being recorded by the Stalker Pro II Radar Gun.
