2019 Academy World Series: Top Seniors

On May 10th-12th, 2019 at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, PBR Florida hosted the First annual Academy World Series. This years event featured eight academies from Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama. The event featured a pair of pool play games followed by single elimination bracket-play. There were many players that stood out this past weekend. Here's a look at some of the top seniors from the Academy World Series.
TNXL Academy
Joseph Charles RHP / TNXL Academy, FL / 2019North Carolina recruit, stocky, strong right-hander works downhill with a 90-93 mph fastball that has some late life down in the zone. He showed an above average slider at 80-83 mph with some tilt. Charles can lose command at times, but has a high ceiling.

Hamilton Martinez RHP / Heritage Christian, FL / 2019FIU commit was sitting 88-90 and was effortless when throwing. Kept the ball low in the zone with all pitches. Curveball was sitting around 72-73.

Christian Bernabe 3B / SS / Deland, FL / 2019Arkansas-Little Rock commit looked great with a balanced approach at the plate and great barrel awareness. Moved athletically all over the field on the bases and defense.

Jose Fulgencio SS / OF / TNXL Academy, FL / 2019Uncommitted shortstop showed off great range and body control at short. At 6-feet 170 pounds, he can move around the infield well. He flashed the leather and showed off an above average arm.

Tyrell Brewer SS / 2B / TNXL Academy, FL / 2019FSU recruit. He showed exceptional patience at the plate by working long at-bats the entire game. His swing was very short and compact with the barrel staying through three to four balls. Flashed great instincts on the base paths, stealing multiple bases.

Benjamin Chestnutt RHP / The Master's Academy, FL / 2019UCF commit, 87-90 fastball, 72-73 curveball, has armside run and throws ¾ armslot, has good frame, but still has room for growth, stays in line with delivery to home plate, strong competitor and has a gamer mentality.

Doug Kirkland C / TNXL Academy, FL / 2019FSU commit, strong athletic frame with strong lower half, moves above average behind the plate, blocks well and has strong hands when receiving, above average arm, comes around the ball a little too much on throws to 2nd, 19.5-2.0 pop times, balanced approach at the plate, big time fastball hitter, work on hitting off speed more consistently.

Pro5 Academy
Sawyer Worrell LHP / OF / Pro5 Academy, NC / 2019USC-Upstate recruit, he stands 6-foot-2, 195 pounds. Strong frame with some projection remaining. He has a feel to pitch with that fastball sitting mostly 80-83 touching 85 mph. The breaking ball had quality shape and action at 70-72 mph and will improve as it is thrown harder. Like the upside still to come.

Ronald Evans II 3B / 1B / Crossroads Flex / Pro5 Academy, NC / 2019UNCW recruit, 6-foot-2 inches and 215 pound infielder, Big body and moves aesthetically with power to all fields. Stays on plane and through the zone well when hitting and showed that he’s not just an intimidating presence in the box because of his size. He had an advanced approach and plate discipline, laying off close pitches and 2-strike breaking balls in the dirt. He also showed his ability to let the ball travel and go the other way.

CJ Martin C / 1B / Pro5 Academy, NC / 2019Charleston Southern commit had great footwork behind the plate and an advanced feel for how to play the position. His transitions were clean and quick to go along with an above average arm. Great body control, instincts and arm talent shown on throw to third from knees around right-handed batter. Great use of lower half on throws to bases. No wasted movement. Good bat speed and balance, showed ability to hit the fastball and off-speed. Quick twitch athlete.

Greyson Bailey OF / RHP / Pro 5 Academy, NC / 2019UNCW commit showed off impressive arm strength and the ability to make reads in the outfield. Showed controlled aggression at the plate, showing off a very level bat path. His quick hands allow him to let pitches to get deep.

Jackson Sobocinski RHP / 3B / Pro5 Baseball Academy, NC / 2019Uncommitted, big, strong RHP pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters. Clean delivery with no wasted motions was easily repeated the entire game. His fastball sat 80-82 and featured some arm-side run with depth.

Tyler Driver RHP / Pro5 Academy, NC / 2019UNC Charlotte recruit showed his swing and miss stuff striking out 9 against a good hitting IMG team. Running fastball at 87-89 and hard slider at 83 comes from a high ¾ slot. Creates good torque but there is still room to add more velocity. Hides the ball well.

IMG Performance
Benino Mendella OF / 2B / IMG Academy, FL / 2019Earlham University commit, super athletic and quick on the field, plays bigger than his size at 5-foot-9 inches and 165 pounds, gamer on the field and plays hard, plays good outfield with a good arm, great barrel awareness and stays balanced at the plate with his approach.

Joe Gallagher C / IMG, FL / 2019Eckerd commit receives well with strong hands, good arm with 2.0 pop time, blocks well and moves athletically behind the plate, has the gamer mentality on the field, good balanced approach at the plate, can over stride at times, good gap to gap power and stays through the zone hitting.

Kieren Collins RHP / IMG Academy, FL / 2019John Hopkins commit, fastball 82-84, curveball 73-74, changeup 70-71, commands the strike zone with all pitches and keeps hitters off balance, 6-foot and 170 pounds has room for growth, stays on line when going towards home and repeats mechanics easily.

MVP Academy
Jose Perdomo LHP / MVP Academy, FL / 2019Uncommitted, 74-75 fastball, 62-63 curveball, Mixes pitches well and keeps the hitters off balance while throwing strikes with all pitches. Stayed on line with delivery toward home plate.

P27 Academy
Thomas Harmon LHP / P27 Academy , SC / 2019USC Beaufort commit, 75-77 with has fastball. Curveball was 62-64, changeup 66 mph and command with all pitches, keeping batters off balance.

Reece Fields RHP / P27, SC / 2019North Greenville University commit, 85-87 on the fastball, curveball 75-76 and command of all pitches. Threw 6 innings and had 9 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Simms Owens OF / C / P27 Academy, SC / 2019Charleston Southern University commit. Good approach at the plate and has barrel awareness, gap power.

Kyle York RHP / P27 academy , SC / 2019USC Sumter commit, fastball 85-86, slider 73-74, commands the zone with both pitches, throws across his body and creates arm side run, good long frame and has room for growth. Very repeatable delivery and has good arm action while staying consistent with his mechanics and line towards home.

Next Level Academy
Emmanuel Martinez RHP / Redan, GA / 2019Seminole State commit, 90-94 with the fastball, strong arm but struggles with command.

Jake Nemith 1B / Next Level, AL / 2019Uncommitted, the stocky first baseman showed strength in the swing. There is some stiffness, but present power and showed that in a double and a home run.

Brent Turley RHP / N/A, AL / 2019Calhoun CC commit, 87-89 with the fastball, 72-74 curveball, big body frame that commanded the zone early, good arm action.

Morrquise Charles OF / Morgan City, LA / 2019Uncommitted, showed off his power at the plate by going down and connecting on a slider for a two-run homerun. On the mound he displayed a live arm with his fastball sitting 87-89. His fastball had late arm-side run with some depth. Charles was one of the biggest standouts on the weekend. The uncommitted senior garnered a lot of attention, as he showed well above average bat speed and loose arm on the mound.

J.M. Hamby RHP / Next Level Academy, AL / 2019South Alabama commit, settled in after his first inning of work. He went on to finish with a final line of three hits, three walks, five strikeouts, and four earned in four innings. His fastball and slider had a lot of movement due to his low ¾ delivery. His fastball sat 83-84.

Elite Squad Academy
Leon Paulino OF / Elite Squad Academy, FL / 2019FIU commit impressed offensively and defensively. His tracking ability plays more in RF, as does his strong arm. On offense, the switch hitter had more success from the left side, as he doubled off the RF wall on a low and inside breaking ball. Pulled hands and stayed through to keep it fair. Projects to be a solid corner OF at FIU.

Alexander Aguila SS / 2B / Mater Academy, FL / 2019VCU recruit, he is an athletic middle infielder with above average hands. Offensively, he has a short, compact swing.

Elev8 Academy
Sam Cornelius OF/1B / Kings Academy, FL / 2018Uncommitted, the left handed hitter has long levers and strength in the big frame. Has power from the left side. Stays through the zone well and moves athletically on the field.
