Canada Cup Day 1 - Lakeburn Park Games

Lakeburn Park, Moncton:

On the first day of Canada Cup action at Lakeburn Park, three of the strongest teams in the tournament flooded the field all day.

Quebec was given the toughest draw, getting Ontario in the morning, and British Columbia in the afternoon. When the dust settled, Quebec walked away with two wins, and PEI came up with the stunner, taking down Alberta in the afternoon game.

Here’s a quick summary of each game, and highlighting the top performers:

Quebec 2 vs. Ontario 0

Recap: It was a lefty-lefty matchup, as Ontario sent Campbell Ellis to the mound, while Quebec rolled out Antoine Jean. Ellis kept the opposing bats at bay, spinning five innings of three-hit ball, striking out three while walking three. There was a total of eight hits in this game, but the big one came off the bat of Jason Begin, when Ontario left-hander Curtis March served up a two-out, two-rbi single up the middle, which would be the deciding hit. For Ontario, Noel McGarry-Doyle reached base three times from the leadoff spot, drawing two walks, a single an a stolen base in the loss.

Alberta 5 vs. PEI 7

Recap: It was the first shocker of the tournament, as the PEI Selects put up seven runs on five hits, while capitalizing on three Alberta errors to stun the west coaster’s in their opening game. The Islanders sent Gabriel Penalver to the mound, and he went 4 â…“ innings, while giving up three runs (one earned) on two strikeouts and three walks. Josh Myers had a big day for PEI, going 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI’s. For Alberta, left-hander Liam Froment took the mound, and while he didn’t give up an earned run, he struggled with command going 2 â…” innings, striking out four and walking two. The offense was paced by Michael Brisson, who drilled an RBI double, and a two-run home run in the losing effort. Leadoff man Roen Helgren also put two hits to his name.

Quebec 7 vs. BC 2

Recap: In what should’ve been a tightly-contested game, Quebec blew this one open late, taking it to British Columbia to the tune of 11 hits to go with fifth and seventh inning rally’s. Quebec’s Anthony Gilbert swung it well all day, driving in two runs on two doubles. Nicolas Deschamps and Raphael Pelletier added two hits apiece. On the mound, Cedric De Grandpre kept the BC bats quiet, going 4 â…” innings giving up two unearned runs on four hits. For BC, Gavin Pringle came out of the gate sitting 87-89, but faded as the game went on, walking three batters over four innings.
