Tuesday's MLB Draft recap
June 9, 2010
Overall, it was not a good day for Illinois players in Tuesday’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Minooka right-hander Mike Foltynewicz kicked off the draft in fine fashion, as the 6-foot-4 ace was selected No. 19 overall by the Houston Astros during Monday’s televised first-round.
On Tuesday, in the second through 30th rounds, 22 Illinois players were selected, and only six high school prospects. After Foltynewicz, the next highest pick for an Illinois player was former Richmond-Burton standout OF Nate Roberts in the fifth round by the Twins. Roberts played a year a Northwestern before transferring to Parkland College and then High Point. The next prep player selected was Granite City catcher Jake DePew, in the 9th round, by the Rays.
A lot of the pre-draft buzz about high-school players being selected in the top rounds never materialized. Joliet Township left-handed hitting catcher Mike Hollenbeck went in the 14th round to the Red Sox, and hard-throwing Mt. Zion RHP Ryan Hartman, who had gained a lot of momentum during the spring season, was picked in the 16th round by the Cubs.
Other prep players selected Tuesday included Morgan Park OF Kendall Ratcliffe (25th round), Harrisburg SS Reid Roper (29th round) and Lakes LHP D.J. Snelton (30th round).
