Several 2011 prospects pick their schools

July 1 is here … let the “official” recruiting frenzy begin. Five Class of 2011 prospects have made their college choices recently.

Two more Providence Catholic prospects are off the board when 3B Sam Travis and SS Joe Houlihan named their schools. Travis, who hit .486 with 5 HRs and 32 RBI as a junior, has picked Indiana University. Houlihan, a switch-hitting two-year standout, has selected Central Michigan University. Travis and Houlihan mark the fourth Providence 2011 prospect to commit, joining RHP Brandon Magollones (Northwestern) and LHP Matt Trowbridge (Central Michigan).

Travis isn’t the only player Indiana University has plucked. Chris Sujka, an OF/2B from Mount Carmel HS, also recently committed to the Hoosiers. As a junior, the athletic Sujka broke the Caravan single-season record with 56 runs to go along with 8 homers and a .470 batting average. Sujka is the third Mount Carmel player to name their school, joining 1B/LHP Jeff Boehm (Kentucky) and RHP John Kravetz (Illinois).

Eastern Illinois University landed a pair of strong arms from the Class of 2011: Lincoln-Way West RHP Cody Vogler and North Clay RHP Andrew Grahn. Vogler is a 6-foot-2, 240-pound right-handed power arm who also hit 10 homers and 18 doubles at the plate. Grahn is a loose and projectable right-hander who’s dominated small-school competition since his freshman year.

In other recruiting news, Ryan Walsh, a Class of 2010 catcher from state-champion Naperville Central, has committed to University of Illinois-Springfield. … Michael Pittman II, a Class of 2010 outfielder from Springfield HS, has committed to Carl Sandburg College.
