PBR talks with recent Xavier commit Andre Jernigan

Andre Jernigan recently committed to play baseball at Xavier University. PBR was able to talk with the senior SS from Homestead High School about baseball and the recruiting process. Here is out conversation...

PBR: Why did you choose Xavier?
Andre: Xavier's baseball program and the academics. It's a great campus and I felt like the coaching staff wanted me there

PBR: Was it important to stay close home/travel?
Andre: It really wasn't important. Although being somewhat close to home allows my family to come visit and watch the games occasionally.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Andre: They expect me to contribute to the team my first year, so I have to continue to work hard and improve all aspects of my game in order to reach that goal.

PBR: What were your expectations about recruiting heading into the summer?
Andre: Going into the summer, my dad, having been recruited himself in high school, pretty much told me how things would work and to enjoy it. When it comes to what schools, I really wasn't sure what to expect, so I kind of just let things play out to see what would happen.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that you will help Xavier?
Andre: As a player, I'd say my natural ability and athleticism are my biggest strengths. I also would say that my willingness to work and continue to develop goes along with that. I can use those strengths to help the team wherever needed.

PBR: How has travel baseball helped your development as a player?
Andre: I played for the Ft Wayne Cubs and we had a competitive schedule. That allowed me to see other player's and face really good pitching. My goal, in travel ball, was to work hard and try to become a better ball player and I think the competition of travel helps.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Andre: My parents, especially my dad, and coach Quentin Brown (Ft Wayne Cubs). They both played D1 and had some really good advice for me.

PBR: What were your stats for this spring season at Homestead?
Andre: I'm not sure of my spring stats, but it was a successful spring season.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher/hitter that you have faced in Indiana?
Andre: It's hard to pick one specific pitcher, because I've faced so many good pitchers in Indiana.
