Final 2011 Top 25 team rankings
June 18, 2011
Despite miserable weather and horrible playing conditions, the 2011 season is in the books, which means we once again bring to you the final state team rankings.
Lyons Township?s 8-3 victory over preseason No. 1 Providence Catholic in the Class 4A state championship game vaulted the Lions to the top spot after sitting in the No. 2 spot for the last half of the season. Providence dropped to No. 2, while two-time defending Class 2A champion Teutopolis vaults to the No. 3 spot. Don?t get fooled by Teutopolis being a small school; the Wooden Shoes have an abundance of talent, including the most dominant pitcher in the state, left-hander Derek Thompson, who allowed only one earned run all season.
Settling in at No. 4 is Prospect, which made a late postseason run behind junior Jack Landwehr to take third place in Class 4A. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2011 season was Glenbrook North, which comes in at No. 4 after falling to Prospect in the supersectionals.
Mount Carmel, which finished fourth in Class 4A, sits at No. 5 in the final poll. Plainfield North, Streamwood, Pleasant Plains and Normal West round out the final top 10 teams.
