Class of 2012 Showcase results



The Prep Baseball Report Class of 2012 Showcase on October 23 at the Max featured a lot of high-end prospects from all over the state. Several players emerged as prospects to pay close attention to in the coming years. While there were several outstanding showings, Lyons Township RHP Steven Heilenbach earned top prospect honors, followed closely by Zach Stoner, a 6-foot-3 C/1B from Rockford Boylan HS who is arguably the best left-handed bat we?ve seen in the state.

A look at the top performers at the event:

1.  Steven Heilenbach, RHP, Lyons Township HS, 2012 ? The loose and athletic 6-foot-2, 170-pound Heilenbach is one of the premier right-handed pitching prospects in the state. Coming from an easy three-quarter arm slot, he showed the ability to throw three plus pitches, including an 85-86 mph fastball with late arm-side life. Heilenbach also threw a firm slider with late two-plane break. His best pitch, however, was a changeup that displayed late fade and excellent arm action.

""2. Zach Stoner, C/1B, Rockford Boylan HS, 2012 ? The 6-foot-3, 188-pound Stoner very well be the most impressive left-handed hitter in the 2012 Class. Stoner has a quiet and compact plate approach, and is explosive through the hitting zone. The ball comes off his bat with excellent backspin carry and showed he can hit for power to all fields. Defensively, Stoner showed athletic feet as he registered a top pop time of 1.95. Stoner also ran a 7.28 60.

3. Alex Bee, C/RHP, Chatham Glenwood HS, 2012 ? The strong-bodied 6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitting catcher showcased a strong arm, athletic feet and soft hands behind the plate. All his throws were on the bag, his top pop time registering at 1.95. Offensively, he displayed an athletic setup and quick hands which will play at the next level. On the mound, Bee continued to showcase well with a fastball topping at 84 mph and some feel for his changeup.

4. Tanner Scott, C/OF, Burlington Central HS, 2012 ? The strong-bodied 5-foot-11, 185-pound catcher can flat-out hit. He showed explosive hands and bat speed at the plate with legitimate power potential that will certainly play at the next level. Scott is one of the better offensive prospects we?ve seen in the class. Defensively, Scott has a strong, accurate arm; his top pop time was 2.01.

5. Danny Dennehey, RHP/OF, Morrison HS, 2012 ? As one of the more promising two-way prospects in the state, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Dennehey impressed in several facets of the game, including running a 6.9 60. His athleticism shined in the outfield, where he showed fluid movements and excellent carry on his throws. On the mound, Dennehey has a lot of upside, as his fastball topped at 85 mph and also displayed a curveball with tight spin and sharp break. At the plate, he displayed impressive bat speed, quick hands, and power potential. Danny stayed balanced throughout his swing and squared the ball up consistently.

6. Drake Robison, RHP/MIF, Harlem HS, 2012 ? The lean 5-foot-11, 160-pound right-hander possesses an ultra-quick arm, and was one of the top pitchers at the showcase, throwing his fastball consistently at 85 mph. Robinson also showcased a sharp 11/5 breaking ball with good depth. A two-way talent, Robison also fielded the ball with good rhythm and fluidity, as well as displaying a strong arm across the infield (80 mph).

7. Eric Fight, OF/RHP/C, Normal Community HS, 2012 ? The 6-foot, 175-pound outfielder impressed with his overall skill and athleticism. Fight ran an event-best 6.83 60, in addition to showing off a solid arm (81 mph) and athletic actions from the outfield. At the plate, Fight hit the ball hard with some power potiential.

8. Joe Kubera, MIF/RHP, Rockford Boylan HS, 2012 ? The athletic Kubera showcased as one of the top two-way players at the event. On the mound, Kubera has an extremely loose and fast arm, and showed three quality pitches, which he located for strikes. The 5-foot-10, 155-pounder?s fastball topped at 85 mph with arm side run. Kubera also showed a quality feel for his change and a tight breaking ball. In the infield, Joe demonstrated a strong arm and good range.

9. Michael Lynch, RHP/3B, La Salle?Peru HS, 2012 ? The 6-foot, 195-pound right-hander has a strong lower half, which he used to drive an extremely heavy 84 mph fastball with some late sink. He also showed an 11/5 curveball with good depth, not to mention a quality changeup with arm side movement.

10. Wyatt Spector, LHP/OF, Lake Zurich HS, 2012 ? The wiry 6-foot-3, 165-pound left-hander possesses considerable upside. Coming from a low three-quarter arm slot, he has a lot of deception and tailing action on his fastball, which topped at 80 mph. Spector also threw a slurve and a changeup with good arm side action and sink. With his size and arm action, Spector should see a velocity spike in the coming years as he physically develops.

11. Dustin Detweiler, RHP, Normal West HS, 2012 ? The 6-foot, 185-pound right-hander showcased a lively fastball that topped at 84 mph from a high three-quarter arm slot. Detweiler also threw an 11/5 curveball with tight spin and flashed occasional sharp break.

12. Joshua Haugen, MIF, Aurora Christian HS, 2012 ? The lean 5-foot-11, 165-pound middle infielder displayed good hands, defensive actions and quick feet in the infield. At bat, Haugen showed a smooth swing while staying balanced, producing line drives to all fields. Haugen ran a 7.38 60.

13. Braden Mulder, LHP/1B, Illiana Christian, 2012 ? Mulder is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-hander showed a clean, over-the-top arm action and worked on a downward plane. His fastball topped at 81 mph, while he also showed a 61 mph curveball. Additionally, Mulder?s changeup had some arm-side run and late fade.

14. Cory Starnes, C, Harlem HS, 2012 ? The physical 5-foot-11, 190-pound catcher displayed a quick release and accurate arm with a top 2.19 pop time. At the plate Starnes found the barrel with a level swing.

15. Jordan Schwartz, MIF/OF, Highland Park HS, 2012 ? The switch-hitting middle infielder showed a clean, level swing with excellent hitting mechanics from both sides of the plate. The 6-foot, 155-pounder also showcased soft hands in the field.

16. Alex Trautmann, OF/3B, Guilford HS, 2012 ? Trautmann showed his versatility by showing athletic actions at both the outfield and infield. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete, who ran a 7.0 60, also showcased a quick bat and level swing.

17. Bryan Engelsen, LHP, Rockford Boylan HS, 2012: The 5-foot-10, 160-pound left-hander showed feel for three pitches, including a fastball that topped out at 79 mph. He also flashed a curveball with some bite and a changeup with arm-side action. Engelsen also ran a 7.27 60 and showed solid arm strength from the outfield.

18. Carson Neushwander, OF/RHP, Minooka HS, 2012 ? At the plate Carson showed a line drive swing with good bat speed. In the outfield he displayed a solid accurate arm with some carry. On the mound the lean the 5-foot-11, 165 pound right-hander topped at 81 mph. player also displayed good foot speed running a 7.07

19. Austin Zimmerman, 3B/RHP, New Trier HS, 2012 ? The lean 6-foot, 160-pound Zimmerman on the mound came from an over the top arm slot with a fastball topping at 81. Zimmerman?s curveball showed good depth and changeup was consistently thrown for a strike. He also showed defensive prowess at third base, as he moved well laterally while displaying good hands.

20. Kevin Garon, RHP/1B/OF, Naperville North HS, 2012 ? The athletic 6-foot-1, 180-pound player moved fluidly in the field and displayed his athleticism running a 7.13 60. He also demonstrated a solid, accurate arm from the outfield.

21. Tyler Woolbright, 1B/RHP, Rockford Lutheran HS, 2012 ? Woolbright possesses an athletic 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame and performed solidly both at the plate and on the mound, where he showcased a 79-80 mph fastball. Offensively, he demonstrated some power potential.

22. Anthony Mack, MIF/OF, Libertyville HS, 2012 ? The lean 6-foot, 160-pound Mack showed a quick left-handed swing at the plate that found the barrel consistently while spraying line drives to all fields.

23. Matt Wisniewski, OF/3B, Fremd HS, 2012 ? The lean 6-foot-1, 175-pound Wisniewski moved well in the field and displayed a solid arm. At the plate Matt showcased a line-drive swing with good bat speed and whip through the hitting zone. Matt consistently squared up the ball with strong, aggressive swings.

24. Brad Taylor, C/3B, Lyons Township HS, 2012 ? Behind the plate, the 6-foot, 175-pound Taylor threw a respectable 2.2 pop time. At the plate Taylor showcased some bat speed with some power potential.

25. Jacob Tegeler, C, Morrison HS, 2012 ? The 6-foot, 165 pound Tegeler is an athletic catcher who ran an impressive 7.06 60. Defensively, he has athletic feet and had a top pop time of 2.19.  Offensively, Tegeler has an aggressive approach and showed a level swing with some pull-side pop.

26. Wes Hall, MIF/OF, Streator HS, 2012 ? The lean 6-foot-3, 160-pound Hall has a projectable frame and solid athleticism, as he ran a 7.35 60. At the plate, Hall sprayed line drives.

27. Thaddeus Rogozinski, 3B/OF, Fenwick HS, 2012 ? At the plate, Rogozinski takes an aggressive plate approach, which he used to show some power potential. The physical 6-foot, 182-pounder also showed some versatility, playing both the outfield and third base.

28. Devin Ambrose, Plano HS, 2012 ? Ambrose was one of the better athletes at the event, as he ran a 6.93 60 while demonstrating quick hands and fluid actions in the field.

29. Cody Schrader, MIF/RHP, Elk Grove HS, 2012 ? The 5-foot-8, 150-pound MIF showed good hands and an accurate arm across the infield. At the plate Schrader showed a level swing to go along with a quick bat that found the barrel consistently.

30. Brock Borgeson, RHP/2B, Naperville North HS, 2012 ? At the plate, the left-handed hitting Borgeson showed good bat speed with some pop. The 5-foot-8, 140-pound two-way player consistently sprayed line drives to all fields.
