Cathedral leads the way in PBR?s Preseason Rankings

 1. Cathedral High School, Indianapolis:  The Irish have been a dominant team the last several years.  They lost only twice in 2010, once in 2009, and only 4 times in 2008.  Last season Cathedral was the 4A State Runner-up falling just short to Fort Wayne Carroll 1-0.  The Irish return two D-1 commits in  Dillon Peter?s ( LHP), who earlier this season committed to play at the University of Texas next fall, and Phil Mosey (IF), who has committed to play at Notre Dame.  Fellow seniors Jake Toneges, Cam Nelson, and Ian Cuereton should also make a positive impact for the Irish this spring.  Nick McCarty, Matt Dauby, and Ryan Levenhagen lead a talented junior class and will be key contributors to Cathedral?s success.

The Irish are looking to return to the 4A State Championship game in June; however the road to get there will not be easy.  Their schedule is full of ranked teams, including a match-up against Louisville powerhouse St. X, and a trip to the Midland Classic in Ohio.  Cathedral?s toughest stretch may come in their sectional 10 tournament when they will need to get by #3 ranked Lawrence Central, always competitive Lawrence North, North Central (Indianapolis), and a much improved Warren Central squad.

Top Returning Players:

Dillon Peters (2011) - Peters is headed to the University of Texas next fall.  He is a strong arm lefty that touches 96 on occasion.  He is considered one of the toughest competitors in the state and knows how to win.   Peters is also one of the leading hitters for the Irish.

Phil Mosey (2011) - Notre Dame- Mosey has a pro body that hits and hits a lot. He will hit for a high average and will hit for power.  Mosey will make the transition from shortstop to third base in 2011.

Nick McCarty (2012) - McCarty is a RHP and has the highest PBR recorded velocity in the 2012 class to date at 89 mph. He features a plus changeup and movement on his fastball making him one of the best number two pitchers in the state.

Matt Dauby (2012) - Dauby is a 6-2 190lb shortstop who is a defensive star up the middle. He possesses quick hands and is easily 86-87 mph across the diamond. Dauby reworked his swing this offseason which should lead to great success at the plate.

Ryan Levenhagen (2012) ? Levenhagen is a 6-5 first baseman with all the tools to be an offensive star. Look for him to put up big power numbers this season.

2. Laporte High School: Laporte is coming off a 2010 campaign in which they won sectional 2. They posted a 27-3 record and return two top 20 players in the 2011 class; Conner Podkul and Kyle Upp.  Both Podkul and Upp will be attending Purdue next fall.

3. Lawrence Central High School:  L.C. is coming off a disappointing sectional loss to Cathedral last season.  Pitching will be the Bears? strength this spring with RHP?s Christian Montgomery (Chipola  C.C.) and Jared Ruxer (Louisville) leading the way. Both Montgomery and Ruxer possess fastballs that sit 90+ mph.  Joining Ruxer and Montgomery as key contributors will be Purdue signee Brandon Krieg (IF) and Indiana signee Brandon Wind (C/P).

4. Crown Point High School: Last year Crown Point finished the regular season as the number one team in the state. They return several key players including Michael Manion (RHP), Jake Lindeman (IF/P), and Jose Andrade (C, 3B).

5. Bloomington South High School:  Last season Bloomington South reached the class 4A Semi State.  They return 3B/P Joe Forney (Xavier) and one of the top 2013?s in Nolan Rodgers. Along with Forney and Rodgers, the Panthers return 5 starters that all have the ability to play college baseball.  Look for the Panthers to make another deep run in this year?s state tournament.

6. Jasper High School:  Jasper returns 7 starters lead by senior pitcher Spencer Sapp.  Jasper is the 2010 State Runner-Up in class 3A, and is the preseason favorite to win the 2011 3A state title.

7. Penn High School: This perennial powerhouse should once again have a successful year. Penn returns a top 10 senior in Max Andresen (C), along with top 50 players Kyle Schneider (IF) and Sam Sweeden (MIF). The 2012 class at Penn features two top 100 prospects; Caleb Birkey (OF) and Tyler Thompson (LHP).

8. Noblesville High School:  The Millers return 7 starters from their 2010 sectional championship team, including two top 50 players in the 2011 class, Ryan Byrne (RHP) and Derek Asuras (LHP).  Both will provide plenty of depth on the mound, along with 2013 prospect Brock Masterson.

9. Lake Central High School:  Pitching should be strong for Lake Central this spring.  Jimmy McNamara (LHP) and Taylor Lehnert (RHP) are two of the best 2012 arms in the state.  Joining these two powerful arms will be 7 returning positional players from last year?s 20-6 team.

10. Brownsburg High School:  Brownsburg will once again be a very talented team, but this time under new leadership. The Bulldogs will be led by a strong junior class and returning senior catcher Tyler Hampton. The junior class includes ranked players; #2 Isaac Sampen (IF, P), #27 Tyler Whetstone (OF), #43 David Oliger (IF), #47 Dylan Whetstone (C, 3B), and #55 Logan Coughlin (OF).   lt;/span>
