Brownsburg vs. LC Scrimmage Recap
March 25, 2011
Several schools kicked off the 2011 Indiana high school baseball season with a scrimmage game this week. No matchup was more highly anticipated than Lawrence Central vs. Brownsburg. Although it was just a ?meaningless? scrimmage game, the game featured two top 10 teams, along with many players ranked in the top 100 in both the 2011 and 2012 classes.
The #1 ranked player in the class of 2011, RHP Christian Montgomery, was impressive in his first outing for the Bears. Montgomery was getting his fastball up to 91-93 mph, touching 94 on occasion. He also showed a hard breaking ball that projects to be a plus pitch at the next level. RHP Jared Ruxer's, ranked #4, fastball was consistently 89-91 mph and displayed a plus changeup and slider giving him more depth than he has shown in previous years.
Brownsburg?s Issac Sampen easily proved why he is the #2 prospect in the 2012 class. At the plate he showed a quiet, simple approach with quick hands and pop, allowing him to turn on Montgomery early in the game. Sampen did not pitch in the game, but threw a bullpen showing a quick and clean arm action.
Other top players in the game included Lawrence Central seniors; Brandon Krieg (Purdue), Brandon Wind (Indiana), and junior Jaylen Quarles. Top players for Brownsburg were; senior catcher Tyler Hampton (Wabash), junior pitcher Mycah Whetstone, and sophomore Sam Sampen.
