Wyoming Prospect ID Showcase Catcher Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Wyoming Prospect ID Showcase was held in Cheyenne Wyoming. 44 prospects completed a pro-style workout for the PBR Colorado's Scouting Staff, several of whom were new to the staff. There were some impressive numbers that came out of the event on this weekend.

Over the next week we will break down the event by position.  Starting off our look at the Wyoming Prospect ID is the catching position

Catching Analysis:

Finely Hastings, C/1B Cheyenne East High School (2017)
A 6-foot-2, 170-pound right hand hitting catcher/1B  who ran a 7.1 60.  At the plate he stands wide and balanced.  Uses a high leg kick to load on his back side.  Strong lower leg drive and a slight uphill swing path.  Exit velocity was 89 MPH.  Behind the plate he sets up low in the zone and showed quick actions on blocking balls.  Throws were accurate to the bag and arm velocity was 72 MPH.  Pop-times were 2.08-2.10. 

Race Johnston, C/RHP, Sheridan High School (2018)
A 5-foot-10, 172-pound right hand hitting catcher/RHP who ran a 7.5 60.  At the plate he stands tall with a simple set up and a short stride on the pitch.  Weight moves forward on the swing and bat sweeps through the hitting zone.  Exit velocity was 81 MPH.  Behind the plate, he blocks from an upright position.  He shows quick feet and exchange on throws to the bag.  Pop-times were 2.18-2.20 with a 72 MPH arm.  On the mound he stands tall and falls in-line to the plate on his delivery.  He delivers from an over the top arm slot and showed good control of both sides of the plate.  Fastball was 71 MPH and he added a 52 MPH curve and 63 MPH change. 

Blake Labuda, C/2B, Legacy High School (2019)
A 5-foot-8, 135-pound right hand hitting catcher/2B who ran a 7.6 60.  At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a short stride on the pitch.  Quick hips fire through the zone and he hits with good extension out front.  Swing path is slightly uphill with a 72 MPH exit velocity.  Behind the plate he sets up low in the zone and shows quick actions and soft hands while blocking pitches.  He has a quick exchange and throws from an over the top arm slot.  Pop-times were 2.06-2.10 with good accuracy to the base.  Arm velocity was 69 MPH.  

Ryan McDaniel, C/OF, Mead High School (2019)
A 5-foot-6, 110-pound right hand hitting catcher/OF who ran an 8.5 60.  At the plate he starts balanced and uses a long slow load to get his weight to the back side.  Swing path is long though the zone and the bat sweeps upward on the swing.  Exit velocity was 80 MPH.  Defensively, he showed well both in the outfield and infield.  He showcased good footwork that allowed him to get in good throwing position.  Arm angle is over the top and arm velocity was 71 MPH in the field.  Behind the plate he showed good positioning and soft hands while blocking balls.  He delivers from an over the top arm slot with a good transfer on the throw.  Pop-times were 2.22-2.25 with some accuracy to the bag. 

Connor McLeod, C/RHP, Cody High School (2018)
A 6-foot-3, 185-pound right hand hitting catcher/RHP who ran an 8.0 60.  At the plate he stands balanced with a high leg kick for timing on the pitch.  Weight transfers forward on the swing with an uphill path to the ball.  Good extension through the zone on the live round and exit velocity was 78 MPH.  Behind the plate he sets up high in the zone, but shows good mechanics on balls in the dirt.  Throws to second were from a high ¾ arm slot with pop-times of 2.16-2.20 with some accuracy to the bag.  On the mound he stands tall and falls in-line with the plate on his delivery.  Would benefit from better extension out front.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and maintains good arm action on all pitches.  Fastball was 75 MPH with good control away, he also showcased a 57-59 MPH curve with sweeping break and a 65-67 MPH change. 

Daniel Moore, C/3B, Horizon High School (2017)
A 6-foot-2, 195-pound right hand hitting catcher/3B who ran a 7.6 60.  At the plate he hits from a slightly open stance with a short stride to come square.  Good rotation on his back side and strong leg drive produced a 92 MPH exit velocity.  Swing is built for good pull side power and he showed that well during the live round.  Behind the plate he uses his big frame to smother balls in the dirt.  He has quick feet and a transfer on throws to second base.  Pop-times were 2.09-2.12 with an 83 MPH arm velocity and good accuracy to the bag.
