By Greg Williams and Shaun Vernesoni
Today's Eastern PA Top Prospect Showcase showcased plenty of top talent from the eastern half of the state. Prospects from the Class of 2013, 2014 and 2015 shined on a day where many players turned in impressive results.
Walking away with the honor of "Top Prospect of the Day" was Deon Stafford Jr. (Lower Dauphin). The 5-foot-11, 200-pound right handed hitting catcher is currently ranked No. 39 in the Class of 2014, but based on today's performance could easily be making a move up the rankings. Stafford, fresh off his performance for Team Pennsylvania at the Under Armour Midwest Future Games, stole the show. His day began by topping all runners with a 7.02 60-yard dash. He threw 78mph from the crouch and displayed a top pop time of 2.06 from his catcher's position. Stafford topped all hitters with a bat exit speed velo of 89mph that he put to good use as he put on a clinic in batting practice driving 4 balls out of the park and hitting several other balls off the wall.
Nearly as impressive was Zach Wielgus (William Penn Charter), Class of 2015. Wielgus is not currently ranked in his class, but that will change shortly. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound left handed pitcher topped out at 84mph with more in the tank. He also showed a sharp breaking 73mph curve ball and a 73mph changeup that has good arm side run and late sink. Wielgus showed control of all three pitches and advanced mechanics for a pitcher his age. Below are the top results by position.
