Wild Finish Gets Huntingtown the 3A Title

The Huntingtown Hurricanes scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to come-from-behind and defeat the Chesapeake Cougars by a score of 4-3 for the 3A championship.

With Chesapeake ahead 2-0 heading to the top of the seventh inning Huntingtown came up to the plate and quickly got their first two runners on base after Andrew Pawlowski drew a leadoff walk and Danny Goucher was hit-by-pitch. Brandyn Vogtsberger then laid down a sac but in which a hurried throw got past the first baseman and scored the Hurrincanes first run of the game and put runners on second and third. Pitcher Joe Seidler was able to pick off the runner at third base who was thrown out at the plate to get the first out of the inning and the runner at second was able to advance to third during the rundown. Three pitches later Jack Morales came through with a big single to right field to tie the game up at two.

After an infield fly for the second out of the inning, Davaughn Reid would single up the middle to put runners again on second and third. Eddie Harris would then hit a high chopper over the pitchers head that could only get knocked down by the second baseman, allowing Morales to score and moving Reid to third. With runners on first and third with two out, Harris was picked off at first base, but created a rundown between the infielders that would allow Reid to score and extend the lead to 4-2.

Chesapeake would quickly strike back in the bottom half of the seventh after a leadoff walk and an error on a double play ball up the middle would put runners on first and third. One pitch later Vogtsberger, who was in his fifth inning of relief, got a ground ball that turned into a key double play.  Another pitch later Vogtsberger would again force a ground ball for the final out and Hurricane victory.

Vogtsberger came in relief in the game in the bottom of the third inning and would pitch five innings and gave up only one hit, with one walk and five strikeouts. The talented righty was only eligible to pitch five innings in this game due to pitching nine innings last Tuesday in the semifinal and the MPSSAA pitching rules. After pitching 85-87 touching 88 once on the mound his first inning in relief he pitched mainly 82-85 the rest of the game with a 70-73 mph breaking ball and a 70 mph change that he used occasionally and effectively.

Morales and Harris led the Hurricanes with a hit and RBI each.

Seidler got the hard-luck loss for Chesapeake. The 2018 righty gave up four runs (one earned), striking out six with four free bases (two BB, two HBP). Seidler showed resilience throughout the game with many deep counts against the Huntingtown hitters. He was 83-86 mph early in the game touching 87 and threw a 72-76 mph breaking ball.

Pat Goralski led the Cougar offense going 2-for-3 with two-RBI.
