Western PA Open ID Showcase Analysis: Evaluating the Outfielders

None of the top three outfielders at the Western PA Open ID Showcase on January 5 come from the same class, but they all have one thing in common; they have the tools to play the position. A breakdown of the top outfielders at the event follows.

GiavedoniBraxton Giavedoni, OF/C, Class of 2016, Punxsutawney HS
Giavedoni ran the top home-to-1B time of the day at 4.35. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound, fleet footed freshman showed athletic actions in the outfield, playing through the baseball. Giavedoni showcased good carry on throws of 77 mph from his position. He displayed quick hands and a short swing path in one of the top rounds of batting practice on the day. Giavedoni consistently barreled the baseball to all fields.

Churma Churma, 2B/OF, Class of 2015, Penn Trafford HS
Churma showcased well in all facets of the game and vaulted himself into the PA Class of 2015 rankings at No. 39. He ran a 4.58 home-to-1B time, threw 80 mph from the outfield. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound left-handed hitter impressed at the plate with an 85 mph bat exit velocity. He sits on the backside and uses a strong lower half to create barrel whip. Churma displayed excellent extension to his swing and definite power potential.


CrepsRyan Creps, 2B/OF, Class of 2014, Indiana Area HS
Creps showcased well in all facets of the game earning himself a spot in the Class of 2014 rankings at No. 99. He displayed good foot speed with a 4.45 home-to-1B time. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect showcased the top outfield arm at the event with a top throw of 81 mph. Offensively, Creps used a short swing path, a strong lower half and good extension to barrel up baseballs consistently to all fields with an 82 mph bat exit velocity.
