Vermont Spotlight Game: Division I State Championship - No. 2 Burr and Burton vs No. 1 Essex
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Second-seeded Burr and Burton took advantage of a beleaguered Essex pitching staff to win an 18-8 slugfest with the top-seeded Hornets to win the school's first-ever Division I state title Saturday. The Bulldogs 18 runs and the 26 combined runs set new D-I state title game records.
Burr and Burton (17-2), who scored in six of the seven innings, broke open a 6-5 game with a seven-run fourth capped by Tyler Kraeling's three-run triple with two outs.
Senior righty Grif Stalcup, heading to Bowdoin, shut down Essex (17-3) the rest of the way picking up the victory hurling six innings.
The Bulldogs behind a two-run single by Kraehling in the second jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before the Hornets, fueled by a two-run double by Johnson and Wales-bound Tyler Roberge in the bottom of the second, made it a one-run game.
Sophomore Daniel Hatheway paced the Bulldogs 16-hit attack with four hits and three RBI while Kraeling (5 RBI) and senior James Reilly each had three.
Senior catcher Ryder Thornton and junior infielder Ryan Young each had two of the nine hits for the Hornets (17-3).
