On Saturday, August 20th, the PBR Arizona Staff hosted the Valley Open at South Mountain Community College. The event featured 29 prospects and gave our scouting staff a quality look at players from all high school classes.

Today we continue the analysis of the event with a look at all of the position player scouting reports from the day. 

One of the top uncommitted 2024s at the event was 6-foot 155 pound Kevin Hoffmaster who was an exciting player to watch at this year's Valley Open showing a high waisted athletic build. Hoffmaster showed his athleticism on the EZE jump mat,  jumping a showcase high 29.4 in. Hoffmaster showed well in his BP rounds with a simple set up, shoulder width base with bend in the knees, his hands held above his right shoulder with a flat bat angle. Hoffmaster had an adjustable barrel, with gap to gap line drives in both of his BP rounds. Although the ball came off the bat well, Hoffmaster has room to gain strength which will in turn produce more power to the gaps. Hoffmasters best contact was middle / right centerfield. In the field Hoffmaster showed good timing with the feet and body with some extra movements prior to fielding. From the catching position he showed a quick arm and transfer with his accuracy being slightly inconsistent. Pop time ranged from 1.96 to 2.12. Kevin Hoffmaster will be a follow going into the 2022 fall and 2023 spring High School season at Chaparral High School.

6-foot 190 pound, Left Handed Pitcher Carson Stoller was one of the stand out pitchers at this year’s Valley Open. With a physical build Stoller showed to be one of the more mature pitchers throughout the entire showcase. The LHP Stoller showed an over the top arm action with 3-pitch mix strike ability, and a FB that topped out at 85mph that spun at 2190. Stoller’s curveball ranged from 70-73 with 2000 spin. The Changeup looked to be his best out pitch, sitting 75-78 with 1800 spin and -22.2in of horizontal movement, Stoller keeps good hand speed with the pitch and is able to create some sink. If Stoller is able to work at the bottom of the zone this spring as he did on Saturday, it will give him the best chance for success. Stoller will be a high follow going into his senior season at SD OConnor.

The 6-foot-1 175 pound, Cooper Sobeck was the most intriguing player to join us at this year's Valley Open. Sobeck stands tall in the box with an athletic bend in the knees with a stride that keeps him square. Sobeck showed quick hands, with a short inside path that produced consistent line drives to the gaps. With a 77 mph bat speed measured by Blast, Sobeck showed to be a gap-to-gap, extra base hit type hitter. In the Outfield Sobeck showed athletic movement’s with good jumps to the baseball. Although Sobeck showed an average arm in the outfield, his clean glovework and short arm action showed to be very accurate to the bases. We are excited to follow 2024 Sobeck at Desert Ridge this upcoming season as he will be a high follow for the PBR Arizona Staff.

5-foot-8 140 pound, Roger Hunt was one of the stand out 2026 prospects at the Valley Open on Saturday. Hunt is a mature switch hitting middle infielder that showed he can do it from both sides of the plate in BP. With a smaller athletic build, Hunt stands tall with a loose set up, hands held above the shoulder with a vertical bat path with some rhythm in the hands. From the left side he showed quick hands and a line drive approach to all fields. Very similar to his left handed swing, Hunt’s right handed swing showed to have a full field approach, Hunt's hands from the right side showed to be slightly tighter with an adjustable barrel working inside the baseball. In the field Hunt showed active feet and a quick first step, moving side to side without an issue and a clean glove. The 2026 showed an infield velo of 76 mph. On the mound Hunt showed a loose arm that topped out at 78 mph and a knuckleball that spun at 995. Roger Hunt has shown to be a swiss army knife type player with room to grow. We will be following Hunt as he goes into his freshman season at La Joya.

6-foot-5 210 pound, Mason Hamon showed up to the Valley Open on Saturday with a body you could not miss. Hamon is a projectable right handed pitcher out of Gilbert high school that had the highest velocity on Saturday, topping out at 87.6 mph. Hamon has a tight over the top arm action with a strong lower half. With the fastball being Hamons best pitch he looked to have more confidence in the CV over the CH. If Hamon is able to build on his fastball and get a quality secondary pitch he will be a high follow going into the fall and spring seasons. While the velocity might not be where the body portray’s, we feel Hamon could be a sleeper that is going to make tremendous strides over the course of the year.

Body: 5-10, 160-pounds.
Hit: . Open and upright in set up. Stride slightly closes him off. Some rhythm with the hands. Direct path to ball. Pull side approach, plays out front.
Power: 84 max exit velocity, averaged 74 mph. 271’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 73.00 mph. INF - 76.00 mph. Quick to release with accurate arm.
Defense: 2.03-2.15 pop times. (IF) Taller infield actions. Quick first step, feet get stuck at times. Has some ability with the hands, gets himself in trouble with feet. (C) Athletic at C position. Moves well behind the plate.

Hunter Cline, Desert Vista (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: C/3B
Body: 5-10, 175-pounds.
Hit: . Simple set up. Shoulder width base, slight bend in knees. Hands held at chest height. No stride load. Direct bat path, showed some adjustability with the barrel. Line drive approach., best to middle.
Power: 90 max exit velocity, averaged 82 mph. 298’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 70.00 mph. INF - 73.00 mph. Short over the top.
Defense: 2.05-2.19 pop times. (IF) Raw infield actions. Simple movements. long to release .

Tyler Cram, Williams Field (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: 2B/3B
Body: 5-11, 175-pounds.
Hit: . Stands upright. Athletic and loose setup. Medium sized leg kick, holds ground. Loose swing mechanics, pretty handsy. Occasional early hip action. Has some bat speed, ball jumps to the gaps.
Power: 91 max exit velocity, averaged 81 mph. 344’ max distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 77.00 mph. Short over the top action with good 4 seam spin
Defense:(IF) Takes direct angles, fields in motion to target. Has some give into the body with the hands. Sure glove.

Gavin Crellin, Centennial (AZ), 2024

Hit: . Slightly open and bent in set up. Bat held at shoulder with flat angle. Toe tap stride brings him back to square. Quick hands, sells out to pull side. Ball comes off the bat well to pull side. Struggles with timing/contact points.

Hit: . Narrow in stance with a slight bend in the knees. Up and down stride direct to pitcher. Hands held above the shoulder with flat bat angle. Power potential. Ball comes off the bat well. Works best to the pull side.

Arm: LH. OF - 79.00 mph. LH. Long arm action from OTT slot. 4 seam flight. Has some upside with the arm.
Defense:(OF) Room to grow athletically. Ability to play a corner OF spot. Could be more aggressive to the baseball.

Defense:(OF) Moves around well, smooth OF actions. Confident with the glove. Quick to release.

Body: 6-3, 200-pounds.
Hit: . Simple and soft set up, bend in the knees, small direct stride to pitcher. Pull side approach, can struggle with timing. Has some strength, when on time ball comes off the bat well. Slightly uphill.
Power: 95 max exit velocity, averaged 85.2 mph. 350’ max distance.

Defense:(IF) Direct angles to the ball. Does a good job picking his hops. Quick to release. Moves well for size.

Delivery: Big body, has some stiffness moving down the hill, long stride

CB: 70-71 mph. Has command in the zone, heavy speed change from FB T2098, 2003 average rpm.
CH: 79-80 mph. Had some command issues, but had decent action  T1699, 1589 average rpm.

Owen Harper, Sunnyslope (AZ), 2023

Body: 6-3, 163-pounds.
Delivery: Long lengthy build, high lift and gets down the mound well.
Arm Action: LH. Delivers from a HTQ slot. with good hand speed
FB: T79.2, 78-79 mph. Worked down in the zone with 4 seem FB. Slight miss to both sides of the plate  T2132, 2085 average rpm
SL: 68-70 mph. Sweeping SL, has slightly lower slot on delivery  T2279, 2200 average rpm.
CH: 70-72 mph. Best offspeed pitch, worked primarily down in the zone with good HM. T1965, 1832 average rpm.

Delivery: Big bodied right hander.  Loose arm. Opens front side early. Can struggle with timing out of stretch.
Arm Action: RH. Easy delivery from 3Q slot.
FB: T80.1, 79-80 mph. Slight arm side action.  T2221, 2142 average rpm.
SL: 68-71 mph. Sweeping SL. Stays down in the zone. Showed as best off speed offering.  T2452, 2377 average rpm.
CH: 71-74 mph. CH has small amount of depth to it.  T1976, 1745 average rpm.

Brayden Molter, Basha  (AZ), 2023

Body: 6-1, 165-pounds.
Delivery: Long legs and high lift, athletic on the mound
Arm Action: RH. Delivers from HTQ slot. Quick arm max intent.
FB: T86.6, 84-86 mph. 4 seem had slight arm side run with high spin, Will play up in the zone.  T2469, 2390 average rpm.
CB: 70-72 mph. Slow CV with high spin, had troubles finding the zone. T2611, 2477 average rpm.
SL: 72-73 mph. Sweeping SL. Stays down in the zone. Showed as best off speed offering with high spin  T2570, 2533 average rpm.

FB: T73.9, 73-74 mph. 4 seam had slight arm side run, threw heavy strikes  T1901, 1795 average rpm.
CB: 63-64 mph. Slow CB that tends to miss at the top of the zone.  T2021, 1934 average rpm.

Jackson Schultz, Paradise Valley (AZ), 2024
