Utah State Player of the Year: Cameron Day

Jeff Scholzen
Utah Scouting Director

Prep Baseball Report is excited for the return of Player of the Year Awards, presented by Big League Chew, after the 2020 season was cut short and 2021 generated some incredible individual moments and performances throughout Utah. As the spring high school season comes to a close, Prep Baseball Report is excited to announce one player who emerged ahead of the competition at all levels in the state. This player has been selected not only for their outstanding statistical numbers, but also for their overall effect on their high school program.

Cameron Day, RHP, 6-2 195 (Layton HS)

Cameron’s all-around performance, as well as the impact he has had on Layton HS, has earned him the 2021 Prep Baseball Report Utah Player of the Year honors.

Cameron Day has been selected by the staff of Prep Baseball Report of Utah. The team of PBR area scouts who covered the high school baseball season throughout the spring selected Cameron amongst a strong group of candidates from across the state. The Prep Baseball Report staff has been diligently scouting and covering games at diamonds across the state this spring to bring parents, athletes and fans the most comprehensive coverage of amateur baseball across the United States. The dedication and coverage allow Prep Baseball Report a credible way to identify the top athletes each year who best represent the state of Utah.

Scouting Directors’ Comments:

Cam is a name that has been on my radar since his freshman year, when he was recommended to me, as he was in the upper 80’s at a young age. By Cam’s sophomore year, he hit 90 mph with his FB for the first time, and I knew we had something! Last summer Cameron wasn’t able to try out for the prestigious area code game team in the four corners, due to CoVid and other mitigating factors, so he went into the fall, as a name on the college coaches radars, but not with professional scouts.

When I was hired by Prep Baseball Report to become the state’s scouting director, I made a phone call to Cam’s father, and we talked about, how come a kid that has attended other companies showcases, is touching 94 mph, and wasn’t publicized or marketed? I promised his father that by attending our first event, and getting his data and other metrics, and with his professional toolset, I would make one promise. I couldn’t guarantee that he would be drafted, but that PBR Utah would make him famous, and get the word out on his vast array of tools and skills.

Cam came to the November event, and reached 94 with the FB with an ease to his delivery, suggesting there is considerably more to come. We started to write content pieces and put out social media posts, to get the word out on Cam, and then invited him to the PBR Super 60 event in Wisconsin for the top players in the country to display their tools to MLB scouts and high level decision makers. Cam was even better, sitting 92-93 with the FB and a high of 95. Cam was now a name to be reckoned with! As the spring season neared, no one could quite expect the season he would put up and the impact that it would have on his Layton Lancer team. All Cam did was week in and week out, put up mind boggling numbers, with a no-hitter and also a perfect game for good measure. Layton entered the state championship round of play at Salt Lake CC and although he took his first loss of the year, he was now a name that most likely will hear his name called in the upcoming July 11-13th MLB First Year Player Draft. Cam recently was invited among a group of 90+ HS players around the country to attend the first ever MLB Draft Combine in Cary, NC at the USA Baseball Complex.

It was a pleasure to interact and get to know Cameron and scout him this past spring. Whatever his path takes in July, whether it be signing a professional contract or becoming in my opinion a future anchoring piece in the U of Utah pitching rotation for the next few years, one thing is certain, that Cameron Day has a very bright future ahead of him, and I will be rooting for his success! Once again Cam, congratulations on becoming and earning Prep Baseball Report Utah State Player of the Year!
