Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Seth Huxford
November 14, 2011
Seth Huxford is a 6-foot-3 inch right handed pitcher who shows good athleticism with a long, loose, and quick arm. At multiple PBR events he has shown a fastball consistently in the mid-80’s, topping out at 88 mph. His delivery shows some athleticism and creates good torque. Huxford also shows the ability to throw a plus split finger fastball at 74-76 mph, along with a breaking ball with some tilt at 68-69 mph. His frame and arm whip alone make him a high follow prospect in the class of 2012.
Huxford was a combined 15-0 during the 2011 summer and fall seasons, including 10-0 for travel baseball powerhouse Top Tier. For Top Tier, Huxford allowed only 4 earned runs in 46 innings pitched.
“My experience with Top Tier was fantastic. I played against the best competition, had teammates that are going to be friends for life and was able to play for great coaches. I was able to travel all over playing on beautiful fields at East Cobb and the Team USA Facilities, but most of all was able to spend time with my dad.”
The recruiting process has been much different for Huxford compared to most high other school athletes. He’s been recruited and offered scholarships by D-1 baseball powerhouses Stanford and Louisville, and has been at the top of the list of many other D-1 programs throughout the country. With his size and a mid-80’s fastball, you normally would not see a pitcher like Huxford still unsigned. However, this is Huxford’s choice as he recently decided to serve a 2-year missions trip for his church as soon as he graduates this upcoming May. By taking a 2-year layoff from baseball, Huxford will not be available to schools until 2014.
When asked how his decision to take 2 years off from baseball has changed his recruiting process Huxford said, “After telling the schools of my decision several moved on, which is understandable. Others are still deciding if they are going to offer me for 2014. If the right school decides to invest in me for 2014 then I'll commit before I leave for my missionary service. If not, I'll be a free agent when I return in the summer of 2014.”
If Huxford decides not to sign a letter of intent with a school before he leaves for his 2-year missions trip, he could be a steal for someone in 2014. Not only does he have the talent to succeed on the field, but he has the talent to succeed in the class room. He currently possesses a GPA of 3.67 on a 4.0 scale and scored a 27 on the ACT.
