Sam Shutes is a 6-foot-4, 210-pound strong bodied right hander that shows promise. Shutes has impressed in the past sitting 84-88mph with his fastball. His breaking ball is softer but spins well sitting at 70-71. Additionally he possesses the ability to throw his change up for a strike. His delivery is repeatable and simple making him a strike thrower and a potential innings eater at the next level.
Shutes had been drawing attention from some Division I schools in the state and neighboring states, but was derailed by a freak knee injury last season. Early in the spring he planted wrong and fractured the top of his Tibia. After losing his entire junior season and most of the summer, Shutes also lost interest from schools. However Shutes is healthy now and in the middle of winter seems to be nearing mid-season form. Shutes will be attending the upcoming Unsigned Senior event at Albion College on January 27th, provided that he is unsigned at the time. Shutes will certainly command some attention over the next few weeks.
Finally Shutes is an excellent student sitting at a 3.7 GPA and a 26 on his ACT, which only helps as schools evaluate him.
