Unsigned Senior Spotlight: RHP Jacob Kopp

Unsigned Senior events always seem to bring an unknown or someone hitting their stride to the forefront and this year’s winter Unsigned Senior Showcase did exactly the same. This year RHP Jacob Kopp (West Bend West) came to the forefront and showcased one of the best power fastballs in attendance.
We first saw Kopp in the summer of 2013 in the Summer State Tournament. Kopp went five innings for the Spartans that day and recorded the win while touching 85 mph sitting 80-83 mph and pounded the zone with multiple pitches.
Other than playing the three month long summer high school season Kopp has been absent from the travel ball and showcase circuit.
Fast forward to January of 2015, and Kopp shows up to the Unsigned Senior Showcase hitting 89 mph with his first pitch. Here’s a look at our scouting report from the event:
Thick bodied, 6-foot-1, 230-pound right-handed pitcher with a solid lower half. Delivery works online, excellent balance, keeps head up and eyes level throughout; slight coil at top of balance point with slight open toed landing and athletic finish. Arm action is quick and loose, works with a short stroke and high ¾ slot. Fastball has slight tail in the zone, found the zone regularly good control, occasionally misses up and arm side, ranged 85-89 mph, showed the ability to maintain velocity from the stretch. Curveball worked on 11/5 plane, showed good short action, mostly 71 mph, touched 74, good control, well above average pitch, potential for power curveball. Excellent feel for changeup, sinking action, 76-81 mph, showed advanced control of the pitch, deceptive arm action. Kopp showed a well above average three pitch mix with feel for all three and the ability to consistently pound the zone. Has mature build but fresh arm, like his projection to throw harder as he gets more innings under his belt.
There’s no doubt that going forward Kopp will be one of the more coveted arms still available in Wisconsin, but It’s yet to be determined when and where we will get to see Kopp again as West Bend West’s summer high school season does not kick off until mid-late May.
