Unsigned Senior Q&A with Andrew Quinn (SLUH)
January 14, 2012
PBR: What do you expect going into your senior season?
Quinn: I anticipate that I can pick up right where I left off last spring, and continue to contribute to the team as a leader on and off the field. I have been working hard this offseason, and I am very excited to see the pay off this spring.
PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player?
Quinn: I would say that my poise on the mound is my biggest strength. Coach Nicollerat and Matt Whiteside have helped me develop my poise over the years, and it helps me deal with any situation I am put up against on the mound.
PBR: What aspect of your game do you believe needs the most improvement?
Quinn: Everything in my game can use improvement, but I would say my breaking pitches need the most improvement. This offseason, I have dedicated a majority of my time to developing a slider and a splitter, and I hope to have them both consistent enough to be game ready this spring.
PBR: What are your expectations and experiences in the recruiting process?
Quinn: In all of my recruiting experiences, I have been able to build good, trustworthy relationships with all of the coaches I have had the opportunity to meet with. I didn’t have a whole lot of expectations in the beginning, and I am humbled to have the opportunity to play baseball at the next level.
PBR: What type of program would you like to play at? What is most important to you: Caliber of program, coaching staff, academics, etc…?
Quinn: I look at all aspects of a college baseball program to be of equal importance, but one thing that I value above all is education. It is something that is a big priority for me, and I hope to grow from the education I have received at SLUH.
PBR: What schools are you most interested in right now, and why?
Quinn: Right now, I am looking heavily at schools with great academic traditions and respectable baseball programs. They include DePauw University, Rhodes College, Washington University, and Truman State University.
PBR: What were your personal goals for the 2012 season and were they met? Goals for the 2013 season?
Quinn: Before the start of the 2012 high school season, I made a list of goals for myself that ranged from “first strikeout” to “throw in a playoff game.” I was able to cross off every goal on my chart…except for a big one: winning state. I’d be lying to you if I told you that wasn’t my goal for the season, and I hope to contribute in every way that I can to get SLUH there this year.
PBR: What team do you play for in the summer?
Quinn: The Saint Louis Gamers
PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher or hitter that you have faced?
Quinn: Every hitter I face has different strengths, but the toughest hitter I face would have to be my good friend and fellow Gamer, Joe Schrimpf. Joe and I have been playing together for the past three years, and he has been one of my favorite catchers to throw to. Joe’s ability to know me as a pitcher helps him catch me, but also helps him hit off of me. He always seems to know what I am going to throw to him, and that always makes it tough to pitch to him.
PBR: What is your fondest memory or highlight from your 2012 baseball season (High School or Summer)?
Quinn: Without a doubt, it would be having the opportunity to start the Sectional game against Hazelwood West. I was fortunate enough to throw a complete game shutout and help SLUH advance to its fifth straight quarterfinal game.
PBR: What is your most memorable moment in baseball so far in your life?
Quinn: Hitting a home run in first grade. My bat has lost a lot of its pop over the years, but I’ll never forget my dad giving me a hug as I rounded third base.
PBR: You have attended a PBR Showcase, what are your thoughts on how it will be beneficial to you as you keep moving forward in the recruiting process?
Quinn: The PBR Showcase really helped me get exposure early on to what showcases are all about, and it gave me a good idea of where I stood compared to my peers.
