If you are driving along I-75 on your way from Dayton to Toledo, you will pass Wapakoneta, a town of less than 10,000 people.

For many, the city is best known for being the birthplace of Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon.

But, in between the lines, a group of young, talented underclassmen are trying to make the town known for other reasons.

Fresh of a 17-8-1 season, Wapakoneta finds itself with high expectations heading into the 2011-2012.

A part of the reason for those high expectations rest with talented youngsters, such as sophomore right-handed pitcher Chace Culver.

Culver is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect. With a thin frame and baby face, the talented righty shows potential for the future.

Using a smooth delivery and easy arm action, Culver generates a low to mid 80’s fastball that is impressive for a player his age. In addition, he shows command of a 65-66 mph curveball and 75-76 mph changeup.

Reflecting on his strengths, Culver says, “I think my biggest strength as a pitcher is my ability to locate my pitches. Last year as a freshman pitching varsity, I had to learn that I couldn't over power everyone, and I had to get people out in other ways.”

Talented pitchers aren’t new to the Wapakoneta program

This winter, several members of the Redskins’ squad have been busy working with Brian Garman, a former Wapakoneta player, graduate of the University of Cincinnati, and current farm hand with the Milwaukee Brewers.

While discussing his training regimen, Culver says, “I lift, run, work on explosiveness training, yoga classes, and do a long toss program to build arm strength and increase hand and arm speed."

With the recruiting process just beginning, Culver says, “As of now in the recruiting process, I have really just been receiving and sending letters from, and to schools, attending camps and showcases, and putting myself on recruiting websites.”

Culver carries a 3.3 GPA. He would like to study sports management in college.

This summer, Culver will play for his local ACME team and the Defiance Riverdogs, a travel team out of Northwest Ohio.
