The Maryland Underclass Preview was held on Sunday, February 19 at Diamond Pros in Glen Arm, MD. 40 athletes from across the state were in attendance to perform in front of the PBR Maryland Scouting staff. Yesterday we released the Statistics from the event and today we give you our Early Thoughts from the event on a few of the many talented players in attendance.

There were many projectable pitchers on the day, and two of the more impressive performances came from RHP Marty Sawyers and LHP Nick Collier. Although they were the final two arms on the day to go, they did not disappoint. Sawyers, a 2019 at Southern HS, Has a long, projectable body with a youthful body and room to grow. Sawyers has a clean and loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ slot. He showed command of all his pitches during the bullpen pitching with little to regular effort. He shows a quick arm through release and topped out at 83 mph on the day with more in the tank for the young pitcher.

Collier topped out at 83 mph during his bullpen session, showing command of four pitches with two breaking balls to pair with a fading changeup. Collier has deception in his short arm action and could fill multiple roles within a pitching staff depending on the program. Collier should log his share of innings for John Carroll this season and looked ready to roll this 2017.

Riverdale Baptist OF Matthew Day has made some very good strides since the last time we say him in October. Showing a strong and muscular frame, the 2018 outfielder, put together one of the top workouts on the day with his increases across the board statistically and showing better rhythm at the plate freeing up his hands more. Day is part of a scary and deep outfield combo at Riverdale Baptist and will have to challenge for playing time with Harold Cortijo, Justin Oakley, and Corey Rosier also manning the outfield.

Dover HS 2019 OF/LHP Andrew Carney came on the scene in a big way during the day. Carney is the non-prototypical left throw, right hit combo, and he showed a loose and live arm action from the outfield to go with his strong and durable athletic frame. Carney showed some pop at the plate with some bat speed and really give some intrigue for a future on the mound. He is still learning repeatability on the mound, but the ball comes out well and Carney topped out at 83 during his bullpen. He is one to keep an eye on and see how he develops over the coming year.

Carney's teammate Hiram Davis is another that jumped out showing athleticism and intrigue on the day. Davis showed a top end speed as well as an ability to get to top speed quickly. Davis ran a 4.57 40-yard dash with a 1.60 10-yard split. Davis was up to 81 on the mound as well and right now projects as an outfielder at the collegiate level.
