Underclass Invitational: Outfield Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Underclass Invitational Showcase class took place on Sunday January 25th at the Slammers South Baseball Facility in Englewood, Colorado.  50 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position rankings of the event, culminating with the Top Ten Overall Prospects from the showcase.

Led by Green Mountain's Luke Kuberski. Kuberski is an extremely physical 6-foot, 185-pounder with well above average bat speed and power potential. He posted the highest exit velocity of the event at 91 mph off the tee.

Pine Creek's Toby Scoles was a close second, impressing with his athletic frame, bat speed, and outfield arm. The left handed hitting Scoles ran a 4.22 home to first time, and had the highest arm velocity among the outfielders at 84 mph.

No. 10 2017 Luke Kuberski, OF/RHP, Green Mountain, 2017
Athletic build, advanced physicality, 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder, has  advanced overall strength with power potential in bat. Offensively hits from a tall athletic stance, short stride, high hands and back elbow setup. Strong swing, very muscular, shows power potential in bat with great good extension through the ball. Line drive type hitter, occasionally lifts the baseball, 91 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively plays through the baseball, shows athleticism. Ran home to first in 4.41 seconds which for a big player is not bad. Arm played well from the outfield with a short over the top slot, with accuracy, at 75 mph. On the mound fastball sits 76-78 mph from a 3/4 arm slot, simple, tall-and-fall repeatable delivery, at times falls off to first base. Could add to aggressiveness. 64-65 mph breaking ball showed gradual break, 66-67 mph changeup had a little sink.

Toby Scoles, OF/LHP, Pine Creek, 2017
Athletic build, 5-foot-11, 165-pound outfielder/left-handed pitcher. Offensively hits from a balanced, athletic stance with a short stride leg kick. Hands are even with shoulder and back elbow setup. Bat is wrapped slightly behind head with short load. Level swing with good extension. Line drive type hitter, occasionally lifts the baseball, 79 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively plays through the baseball, shows athleticism. Ran a home to first in 4.22 seconds. Arm played well from the outfield, short over the top slot, some accuracy, showed carry at 84 mph. On the mound fastball sits 79-80 mph, and hit one 82 mph. Has clean set up and at delivery tilts to a high ¾ arm slot, simple, tall-and-fall repeatable delivery, 66-67 mph breaking ball showed gradual break, 73-74 mph changeup displayed cutting action.

1. Aiden Arroyo, OF, RHP, Broomfield, 2017
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP hits from a balance slightly closed stance, hands start back with slight load, short stride, short, level, compact path, up the middle approach, hit several line drives from gap-to-gap, 73 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, threw a strong 83 mph from the outfield from long, loose, athletic, high ¾ arm action with carry. Good hands fielding the baseball, plays through the baseball. Ran a 4.26 home to first time which was the fourth fastest time at event. On the mound fastball sits 77-80 mph from clean, high ¾ arm slot, simple, tall-and-fall repeatable delivery, crouches at balance point.  64-66 mph breaking ball showed gradual break, 66-67 mph changeup displayed cutting action.

2. Andy Beyene, OF, Cherry Creek, 2017
5-foot-11, 130-pound OF hits from a balanced setup, hands load smoothly, no stride approach, with slight toe-tap. Short to the ball with slight load and level bat path produced line drives from gap-to-gap. Shows some raw athletic ability.  Defensively, in the outfield showed good approach to the ball throwing 75 mph from long over the top arm slot. Ran a 4.37 home to first time which was the 6th fastest at event.

3  Thomas Fox, OF/MIF, Mullen, 2018
5-foot-9, 185-pound strong right-handed hitting OF hits from an athletic stance, hands load back smoothly, with good bat speed, gap-to-gap tendencies with power potential, 77 mph exit velocity off the tee which was one of the top velos out of the 2018 class, swing is level through the zone with some good power potential.  Defensively, profiles as a corner outfielder, threw 77 mph from the outfield. Ran a 4.70 home to first time.

4. John Krysa, OF, Mountain Vista, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound athletic left-handed hitting OF hits from an athletic balance stance with some swagger, hands load back slightly, with slight leg kick, good lower half, line drive hitter, 75 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, showed good hands charging the ball, threw 69 mph from the outfield. Tied for the fastest home to first time at the event at 4.19 seconds.

5. Patrick Kauffman, OF, Denver East, 2017
5-foot-11, 195-pound muscular and athletic right-handed hitting outfielder hits from a balanced setup, hands, short stride, short load, and level swing to ball, produced pull-power, generating 77 mph exit velocity off the tee. More lower half could generate more power. Defensively, threw 75 mph from the outfield from long, high ¾ arm slot with accuracy, aggressively attacking the ball. Ran a 4.81 home to first time. Raw athletic ability.

6. No 29 2017 Ben Masi, OF/MIF, Cherry Creek, 2017
5-foot-9, 150-pound athletic right-handed hitting OF hits from a balanced, athletic set up with open stane that closes down with short stride, hands load straight back, short level bat path produced line drives from gap-to-gap with 79 mph exit velocity. In the outfield, aggressively attacks the baseball and threw 69 mph from the outfield. Could add more velocity if hands gets behind baseball more on throws. Ran a 4.41 home to first time which was the 10th fastest time at the event.

7. Noah Montenegro, OF/RHP, Columbine, 2017
6-foot-1, 150-pound lanky right-handed hitting OF/RHP hits from balanced, crouching setup, with small leg kick with short stride, producing 80 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively threw 80 mph from outfield from an over the top arm slot. Needs to get feet more balanced underneath him when fielding ground balls.  Ran a 4.31 home to first time which was the fifth fastest time at the event.  On the mound, fastball ranged from 77-79 mph from long, high ¾ arm slot, separates hands high, with aggressive effort towards plate, also threw a 10/4 shaped breaking ball, lateral break, 67-68 mph range, and a 71-72 mph change.

8. Reston Pritchett, OF/RHP, Columbine, 2018
6-foot, 152-pound athletic built, hits from a slightly crouched athletic setup, short stride, above average bat speed for his age, flat path, 75 mph exit velocity, that generates line drive power with a tendency to want to pull the ball.  Ran a 4.41 home to first time. Defensively, thew 69 mph from the outfield from a long high 3/4 arm slot. On the mound, fastball ranged from 68-69 mph from same long, high ¾ arm slot. Square to the plate with good extension to the mound, then falls off to first base. Also threw a 10/4 breaking ball with gradual break and a 62 mph change up.

9. MIchael Steadman, OF/1B, Summit, 2018
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitting OF/1B hits from a tall setup, short stride, and collapses on back side with 74 mph exit velocity off the tee. Produces line drive, gap to gap power.  Defensively, threw 71 mph from the outfield from long loose, high ¾ arm slot with accuracy and carry.  Ran a 4.69 home to first time.
