Underclass Games: Outfielders

The Alabama Underclass Games were held on Tuesday, June 22nd at Rudy Abbott Field at Jacksonville State University. Players were put through a positional workout in the morning and then each player played in one of the two games that followed in the afternoon. Today, we begin to take a look at each player in attendance as we begin our individual scout analysis from Tuesday's event. Several other position players also pitched an inning in gameplay and their pitching notes will be included in their positional analysis.
Throughout the week we will continue our positional breakdown of all of the players in attendance, but today let's take a look at the outfielders from the event.
Outfielders
John David Burns, OF/2B, (2024) Lee-Scott Academy, AL
5-foot-9, 142-pounds. At the plate, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 82 mph. Setup uses a controlled load coming from an athletic stance in the box. Showed some quick hands and an uphill swing plane. Found multiple barrels throughout his round. Line drive approach. From the outfield, he made throws to the plate at velocities up to 71 mph, showed sure hands and average feet. Throws came from a high 3/4 slot with decent accuracy to the plate. Recorded a 60 time of 7.64 at the event.
Hayden Dupre, OF/LHP, (2024) John Carroll Catholic, AL
6-foot, 159-pound. At the plate, Dupre had a max exit velocity of 88 mph. Starts in a balanced, wide stance then uses a short stride. Bat speed is average, shows a flat swing plane and good extension on his finish. He barreled up some balls throughout his round. Line drive approach. In the outfield, his best throw of the day was clocked at 75 mph, shows smooth footwork. Had a high ¾ slot and a quick arm action with decent accuracy to the base. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.37.
Matthew Ledbetter, RHP/OF, (2024) Vestavia, AL
6-foot, 155-pound. At the plate, Ledbetter clocked an exit velocity of 80 mph. Started in a tall stance and had a controlled stride. Has a flat swing plane and developing bat speed. Found some barrels through his rounds. Line drive approach. In the outfield, his best throw of the day was clocked at 79 mph; shows average footwork. Used a high ¾ slot with a consistent arm action. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.25. On the mound, had a high ¾ arm angle with consistent arm speed. Used easy effort in his delivery. Consistent balance point. Produced a fastball that came in at 76-79 mph and topped out at 80 mph with running action. Shows hard action on his 11/5 curveball (66-67). He had fading action on his changeup (68-70).
Rick McBride III, OF, (2024) Montgomery Academy, AL
5-foot-10, 155-pound slim frame. In the box, McBride III had a max exit velocity of 84 mph. Starts in a balanced wide stance with a quick load, then uses a short stride. An inside-out swing. Found some barrels in his round. Line drive approach. In the outfield, his throws to the bases were maxed out at 76 mph with soft hands and athletic footwork. Used a low ¾ slot with a consistent arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the base. Showed his athleticism during the event with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.76. Big time athleticism as a rising sophomore.
Brody McCain, RHP/OF, (2023) Arab, AL
6-foot-1, 165-pound athletic frame. In the box, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 81 mph. Starts in a wide stance then uses a toe tap for load and an inside-out swing plane. Found some barrels in his round. Opposite field approach. In the outfield, his throws to the bases were maxed out at 81 mph with developing footwork. Showed a high ¾ slot and some accuracy to the base. The athletic recruit showcased his speed with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.93. On the mound, showed a loose arm action and a high ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses some effort. Showed a consistent balance point. Produced a fastball that came in at 77-79 mph and topped out at 80 mph with running action. Shows tight action on his 11/5 curveball (66-67). His changeup (68-69) shows sinking action.
William Perry, OF/LHP, (2024) Pell City, AL
5-foot-9, 150-pound. In the box, Perry had a max exit velocity of 85 mph. Began in an open, tall stance with a quick load to get back down on time. Bat speed is average and displays a flat swing plane. Found multiple barrels with some loud contacts. Gap to gap approach. In the outfield, he showed the ability to make throws to the bases at 77 mph with smooth feet, and consistent hands. Showed consistent accuracy to the base with a ¾ slot and a consistent arm action. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.03. Barreled up multiple balls during gameplay and had a single back up the middle in one at-bat.
Sutton Phillips, OF/2B, (2025) Lawrence County, AL
5-foot-4, 115-pound. In the box, Phillips clocked an exit velocity of 72 mph. Started in a balanced stance and used a quick stride. Has an uphill swing plane and developing bat speed. He barreled up some balls. Base hit approach. From the outfield, he showed the ability to throw at velocities up to 60 mph; had a clean exchange, and consistent footwork. Had a high ¾ slot and decent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.97.
Andrew Pitts, LHP/OF, (2024) Hoover, AL
5-foot-9, 170-pound. During batting practice, Pitts recorded an exit velocity of 92 mph. Sets up in a balanced stance and used a leg kick. Bat speed is above average and uses a flat swing plane. Created some loud contact and found lots of barrels. Pull side approach. Recorded an outfield position velocity of 78 mph; showed consistent footwork. Had a high ¾ slot with a quick arm action. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.47. On the mound, showed a high ¾ arm angle with a compact arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who shows easy effort. Showed a consistent balance point. Produced a fastball that came in at 76-78 mph and topped out at 79 mph with some run and consistent command. Had late action on his 1/7 curveball (67-68). His changeup (70-71) shows fading action.
Xavier Reyna, OF/RHP, (2024) Smiths Station, AL
5-foot-8, 145-pound. In the box, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 74 mph. Begins in an active wide stance with a controlled load, then uses a leg kick. Bat speed is average and shows a rotational swing plane. Found some barrels through his round. Pull side approach. From the outfield, he showed the ability to throw at velocities up to 69 mph with quick footwork. Uses his glove out front. Showed a high ¾ slot with decent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.65. On the mound, pitches from a high ¾ angle. Sat with his fastball at 63-64 mph with a max of 65 mph; had decent control. Showed a 11/5 curveball (57-58) with gradual action.
John Robicheaux, OF/RHP, (2024) Mountain Brook, AL
6-foot, 155-pound. During batting practice, Robicheaux recorded an exit velocity of 91 mph. Began in an athletic stance with a controlled load, then used a small leg kick. Had an uphill swing plane and efficient bat speed. Found multiple barrels with some loud contact. Gap to gap approach. From the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 85 mph with sure hands and athletic footwork. Showed a high ¾ slot and a quick arm action with consistent accuracy to the bag. Showed his athleticism during the event with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.86. On the mound, showed good arm speed and a high ¾ arm angle. Up-tempo type pitcher. Athletic balance point. a clean finish. Threw his fastball 81-83 mph and topped out at 84 mph; had sinking action with heavy movement. He had slurvey action on his curveball (67-70). His changeup (76-78) had fading action. Capped off his impressive day during gameplay with two triples into the LCF gap.
Colton Sampson, LHP/OF, (2024) Russell County, AL
6-foot-1, 175-pound. At the plate, Sampson had an exit velocity of 76 mph. Sets up in a wide active stance and had a toe tap. Bat speed is above average and displays a flat swing plane. Found some barrels in his rounds. Line drive approach. From the outfield, his best throws to the bases were registered at 81 mph with average footwork. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot and a quick arm action. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.04. On the mound, used a long arm action with an over-the-top arm angle. Shows some effort in his delivery. Shows a clean finish. Sat with his fastball at 80-82 mph and topped out at 83 mph with some arm side control and running action. Shows gradual action on his 1/7 curveball (69-70).
Paxton Tarver, RHP/OF, (2025) Decatur Heritage, AL
5-foot-11, 150-pound projectable frame. At the plate, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 81 mph. Sets up in a balanced stance and has a leg kick. Bat speed is developing and exhibits an upward swing plane. Found lots of barrels during his rounds. Line drive approach. In the outfield, his best throws to the infield topped out at 75 mph with sure hands, average feet, and a clean exchange. Had a high ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the base. Recorded a time of 7.25 in the 60-yard dash. On the mound, showing good arm speed he used a high ¾ arm angle and a compact arm action. Up-tempo type pitcher who shows some effort. Produced a fastball that came in at 77-78 mph with a max of 79 mph; had running action and decent control. Shows gradual action on his 12/6 curveball (65-66).
Jason Tharpe, OF, (2023) Smiths Station, AL
5-foot-6, 138-pound. In the box, the left-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 82 mph. Starts in a tall stance with a quick load. Bat speed was quick, and had a flat swing plane. Found multiple barrels during his rounds. Line drive approach. Recorded an outfield position velocity of 80 mph; shows sure hands, and athletic feet. Laterally, his movements were quick. Showed a ¾ slot and a quick arm action. Established speed as one of his strengths with an efficient 60 time of 6.91.
Gage Wilson, 2B/SS, (2024) Wilson, AL
5-foot-9, 155-pound. At the plate, the left-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 88 mph. Setup is comprised of a balanced stance and a short stride. Bat speed is explosive and has an uphill swing plane. Had some loud contact during the round. Gap to gap approach. In the outfield, his best throws to the infield topped out at 76 mph; has average footwork. Showed some accuracy to the base and a high ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.63.
Emory Yohn, OF/C, (2025) Smiths Station, AL
5-foot-9, 150-pound athletic frame. Projectable at the plate, Yohn's best exit velocity was 84 mph. Sets up in a balanced, wide stance. Had electric bat speed for his age and a flat swing plane. He barreled up multiple balls with some loud contact. Gap to gap approach. From the outfield, he made throws to the infield at velocities up to 75 mph; has smooth feet, and consistent hands. Glovework is shown to the side Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a high ¾ slot with a quick arm action. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.27. One to watch over the coming years.
