Scouting Report

Long and loose projectable 6-foot-4 frame, Persons is a high-ceiling right-hander still on the board.  A multi-sport athlete (also a quarterback in football), Persons possesses all the ingredients to make a velocity jump in the near future. In a recent game, Persons sat 84-86 mph, touching 88, while flashing arm-side life and sink.

Working from a high ¾ slot, he showed the ability to go gloveside in to a left-handed hitter.  Curveball flashes shape and spin, but offers a little more snap when elbow gets up and he is on top of the baseball. Has present feel for a changeup. See no reason why he won’t offer a solid three-pitch mix at the next level. Persons has a chance to make a jump as the year progresses and the weather warms.  Right now, the timing is not always right in the delivery, as the arm is not getting up consistently because he is not staying over rubber, and will occasionally work underneath the ball. When the delivery is right, fastball has life and breaking ball is a nice compliment. Plenty of upside for a kid with a wiry, tall, and loose frame.
