Uncommitted Spotlight: '21 Jonathan Merino

Merino is a high ceiling right handed pitcher out of Centennial with a fastball that's been up to 85 mph with seemingly more in the tank. The All-State Games attendee possesses a raw three pitch mix that flashes some impressive actions and command throughout the zone. At 6-foot-0, 165 pounds, he projects to continue adding velocity as he develops physically and utilize his legs more throughout his delivery. In the shortened high school season, Merino had just one start but made the most of it, throwing a complete game against an always scrappy Coronado group allowing one earned run while striking out five Cougars. This a prospect that should already be on more than a few radars and could make a big jump going into his senior year for the Bulldogs.

Delivery: Simple, slightly rushed delivery. Tall/tilt type. Stays mostly upright throughout. On line stride. Throws over high front side. Balanced throughout. With some mechanical adjustments could see some big jumps.
Arm Action: RH. Long, loose arm action. High ¾ slot. Some effort. Repeated arm slot.
FB: 85, 83-85 mph. Flashes of life. Locates well with downhill action.
CB: 64-65 mph. 12/6 share. Flashes back up action. Better action the farther he gets out front with it.
CH: 75-77 mph. Shows comfort in his CH. Some downward action. Can locate.

6-foot-0, 165-pound frame, lean build, long limbs, room to add strength and size. Starts from left side of the rubber, he has an athletic, slightly rushed delivery, raw mechanics, tall-tilt type. Throws over a high front side, high ¾ slot, long, loose arm action. Athletic finish. Fastball, sat 82-83 mph, has been up to 85, jumps out of his hand, slight arm side run, more in the tank. Changeup, 71-72 mph, slows down delivery, flashes sink and arm side fade. Curveball, 64-66 mph, 11/5 shape, potential above average pitch, slight arm curl slowing down his motion.
