Uncommitted Spotlight: '21 C Cade Westerlund

Brett Thorney
Area Scout

2021 C Cade Westerlund (Mountain Pointe, AZ) participated in the #PBRFutureGames for Team Arizona this past summer. His offensive ability with above average pop (93mph exit velo) to LF and arm with 1.89-2.02 pop times behind the plate really stick out. This strong bodied catcher at 6’1” 210lbs also showsmobility and flexibility behind the plate getting under pitches. Westerlund will be a strong offensive catcher to follow going into the spring.

Scouting Report

1/27/19 Uncommitted 6’1 205-pound strong frame. Simple set up at the plate, without much of a load. If he can use lower half more effectively, we will see him take his swing and exit velo (87) to a new level. Behind the plate, he is a solid defender all the way around. Blocks well and shows athleticism to stick at the position. Works around the ball with a quick transfer to get his pop time to 1.93-2.02 and arm strength at 76 MPH.

Fastball got up to 85 with late action, driven by his strong lower half. Filled up the strike zone with a bulldog mentality and went right after hitters. Breaking ball was 72-74 with good shape and a change at 76 MPH.

6/6/18 - C/RHP Cade Westerlund posted the top catcher velo at the event (76 mph) and brings a true physical presence with his 6-foot, 190-pound frame, highlighted by posting an impressive 87 mph exit velocity. Uses an aggressive swing from the right side. Some stiffness in the lower half. Pop times ranged from 2.17 - 2.28 behind the plate. Received ball with two hands, low transfer, quick arm action. He may profile even better on the mound, where he touched 84 mph with his fastball and consistently pounded the zone with intent and some arm speed. Fastball featured fade to his arm side. Keeps torso stacked over back side for a long time. Releases ball over a very bent front leg, chest is almost touching front knee. Curveball was thrown at 68 mph with some depth.
