Austin Mooney, an unsigned 2012 prospect from Dublin Scioto High School, is one of the top catchers left in the state.

Being a two-sport athlete, he juggled the duties of baseball this summer. Still, he sees himself playing baseball at the collegiate level.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound athlete shows excellent catch and receive skills. Behind the plate, he shows athleticism and command of the game. He registers a consistent pop time right around 2.0 along with 79 mph velocity on his throws to second base.

At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a balanced setup along with a short compact, swing that produces consistent line drives. As a hitter, he has the potential to produce more power with some mechanical adjustments. Also, he runs a consistent 7.1 60-yard dash.

Reflecting on this summer, Mooney says, “It was very difficult knowing that this was my last time ever playing football. Being the captain of the football team, I had to be at almost all events for football. But baseball was a top priority also and spending a lot of time on that was important too.”

Because Mooney played multiple sports, it is clear that he developed leadership skills along the way. “My strengths are that I am a very versatile player and with being a catcher, I am a leader by example on and off the field,” he notes.

With the football season complete, Mooney is now shifting his focus towards baseball camps, clinics, and showcases.

Despite being busy with football, he has stayed in contact with several programs this fall, including Ball State, Ohio State, Akron, BGSU, Ohio, Lake Erie, Toledo, Tiffin and others.

When asked about his next step in the process, Mooney says, “I have been on visits and met some of the coaches while I was visiting the campus.  Now that football is over, I plan on making more visits.”

Looking back on his development as a player, he notes his grandpa, “Big George”, as having the biggest impact. He says, “He always goes to all of my events and he has been through so much as a person and that itself motivates me to be a great person in life.”

This past spring, Mooney hit .436 with 1 homerun, 28 RBI, and 34 hits for Scioto. He also went 4-1 on the mound.

In the summer, Mooney is a member of the Ohio Elite Baseball program.
