Trackman Traits- Hitting: 2024 3B/1B Ben Ryan (Indiana Area)
February 11, 2021
Welcome back to the hitting side of Trackman Traits. In this series we will spotlight one player each week who stood has stood out in our "Trackman Era" and take a deeper dive into their numbers and take a look at some that really stand out. Since the implementation of the Trackman technology to our showcases during the 2020 summer we have been fortunate enough to have seen a great deal of talent come through the system. Today, we will be taking a look at the number one third basemen in Pennsylvania's 2024 class, Ben Ryan.
Before we get started, we'll go over and define some of the terminology being used in the piece.
Exit Velocity- this one's pretty simple but this metric measures the speed of the ball off the bat, measured in miles per hour (mph).
Distance- another simple one, this metric measures how far the ball traveled or would travel if it was not obstructed, measured in feet.
Launch Angle- measures the vertical angle of the ball as it leaves the bat. Positive numbers represent balls traveling upward off of the bat and negative numbers mean the ball is traveling downward off of the bat.
Fly Ball %- Percentage of fly balls hit during a given set of batted ball events. Trackman defines a fly ball as any batted ball with a launch angle between 25 degrees and 49.9 degrees.
Line Drive%- Percentage of line drives hit during a given set of batted ball events. Trackman defines a line drive as any batted ball with a launch angle between 10 degrees and 24.9 degrees.
Hard Hit%- Percentage of batted balls with an exit velocity of 90 MPH or higher.
Bat Speed- The speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact, measured in MPH. The sweet spot is measured 6 inches from the tip of the bat. - Blast Motion
Hand Speed- The speed of the handle of the bat just before impact, measured in MPH. The handle of the bat is measured 6 inches from the knob of the bat. -Blast Motion
Rotational Acceleration- A measure of how quickly the hitter gets from the launch position to being on plane. This is measured in G-Force (g). - Blast Motion
On Plane Efficiency %- A measure of the percentage of your swing that was on the swing plane. - Blast Motion

TRACKMAN ANALYSIS
We got a chance to see the young righty Ben Ryan at the Preseason All-State South/Central event this weekend and he was one of the most impressive bats all weekend among all classes, and he is a 2024 grad. Let's dive into the numbers.
Exit Velocity- These are huge numbers put up by Ryan. These are numbers that you expect to see from high-end upper class bats, not necessarily freshmen. The 101.43 MPH max exit velocity will certainly play, and he was able to consistently hit the ball hard with an average exit velocity just a hair above 96 MPH. Really impressive stuff from the youngster.
Distance- Another metric that he impressed in, his max distance shows that power he shows is legit with a 381 ft distance on his furthest hit ball. That max distance trailed only one batter, another Trackman Traits- Hitting alum, the 2022 1B Wesley Parker. His average distance of 272 ft led the way of all batters at the event. Ryan had a propensity to lift the ball to the pull side gap, and he should have no problem finding extra bases and even some homers if he continues to lift the ball with that type of pop.
Batted Ball Percentages- Another impressive number on par with the advanced exit velocity numbers, his 90% hard hit rate is so impressive. Only thing better than dudes who hit the ball hard are dudes who hit the ball hard consistently, and Ben Ryan is one of those dudes. Nobody else in the event was even above 70% in this category, so it's easy to see just how much he stood out. Pairing well with how hard he hit the ball, Ryan also hit fly balls 50% of the time. When you hit the ball as hard as he does, fly balls usually go a long way (see above). This is a good recipe for success for Ryan, just like the 30% line drive rate. It's hard to defend line drives unless they're hit right at someone, so its just about always a good thing to be hitting line drives.
BLAST CONNECTION
Trackman does a great job showing the outcomes of players swings and their batted ball events. Its data is results based, the best numbers come when you get off your best swing and make your best contact. Blast Motion technology, also implemented at the same time this summer as the Trackman, tracks the swing data of a player and can shine a light into what a player does well in their swing. When paired with Trackman data, it can paint a more complete picture of a hitter and help explain why a player is able to hit the ball harder, farther, and more consistently than others.
With the exit velocity numbers Ben Ryan put up, you'd expect some big Blast Motion metrics to be behind them, and boy were they ever. We'll start with the bat speed, which topped put at 80.3 MPH, which is absolutely elite. The average bat speed was also advanced at 74.56 MPH. Both of those numbers can explain the power there, but why stop there when there's even more numbers to back it up? Those numbers would be in the hand speed and rotational acceleration departments, reaching a peak hand speed of 25.3 MPH and a peak rotational acceleration of 23.5 G's. It's not hard to see now how he is able to generate such power. Plain and simple, this dude put up huge numbers in just about every category.
CONCLUSION
The numbers Ben Ryan put up would've been impressive no matter what class year he was. If he was a upperclassmen, nobody would've blinked an eye because those are numbers you'd expect from power bats from juniors and seniors. When you consider the fact that Ryan is a freshman putting up those type of numbers, it becomes even more impressive. He will definitely be a bat to keep an eye on as he continues to get older.
