September 27, 2012
The PA Top Prospect Games will take place October 6 and 7 at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg, PA. There are a number of prospects who will be participating that are highly ranked and have already made a college commitment. Today we take a look at the top uncommitted seniors who will be participating.
Dan Bowman, RHP, Central Cambria HS
Bowman is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound RHP who is ranked No. 34 in the Class of 2013. He sits 82-85, but has touched 88mph. Bowman has command of his 71mph curveball, 74mph slider and 76mph changeup.
Sam Donko, RHP/1B, Youngstown Ursiline HS (OH)
Donko is a 6-foot-1, 235-pound RHP who is ranked No. 39 in the Class of 2013 in Ohio. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder jumped onto the PBR radar in July when he attended a Top Prospect Showcase in Ohio and showcased a fastball that sat at 86 mph and reached up to 88 several times. In addition, he demonstrated command of multiple off-speed pitches. His curveball sat 70-72 mph with late 11/5 break; he also threw a sharp slider in the low 70s; and a change up at 76-79 mph.
Dan Toner, SS/2B, Gateway HS
Toner was the 4th leading hitter in the WPIAL as a junior at .486. He runs a 6.95 60-yard dash and has a strong arm (81 mph across the infield). The 6-foot, 170-pound middle infielder consistently squares the baseball and has shown some gap power. He has good feet, soft hands and good range from his middle infield position. Toner is the ranked No. 55 in the Class of 2013.
Dan Furman, RHP, Monsignor Bonner HS
Furman is a 6-foot, 185-pound RHP who is ranked No. 62 in the Class of 2013. He had a stellar summer travel baseball season that culminated with two outstanding performances at the WWBA 16U National Finals in East Cobb, GA.
Furman, who is a young senior with room for additional physical maturity, got his tournament started by tossing a complete game no-hitter for the Chester County Crawdads against Pure Hitting Baseball from Peachtree City, Georgia. He returned to the mound in the Crawdads' final pool play game against the No. 4 ranked team in the country, NorCal Valley from Northern California. Furman once again went the distance limiting NorCal to just two runs in the Crawdads 3-2 victory.
Furman sits 84-87 with his fastball and will likely continue to see a spike in his velocity as he continues to grow. He also has good command of his complimentary pitches, throwing a curveball, slider and changeup, all in the low 70's.
Blaise McCarty, 3B/RHP, Riverside HS
McCarty is ranked No. 71 in the Class of 2013. He will be the No. 1 starter for Riverside HS this spring. Riverside is the two time defending AA State Champions. McCarty flashed a solid glove and quick feet. His throws had good carry across the diamond at 79mph.
McCarty impressed at the Western PA Top Prospect Showcase this summer. On the mound he showed the second best velo of the day, topping out at 85mph. The 6-foot-0, 170-pound right hander had good movement on his fastball and showed excellent control of his secondary pitches as well. His curveball had an 11/5 break out of a high ¾ arm delivery, while his changeup sat 71-73 with late downward and arm-side run. Offensively, McCarty consistently drove baseballs to gaps and used a sound approach to consistently square the baseball. He projects as a possible two-way player at the next level.
Colin Gibbons-Fly, SS/3B, Mercersburg Academy
Gibbons-Fly is an interesting prospect at 6-foot-1 and 180-pounds. He runs a 7.00 60-yard dash, and has a strong arm across the infield at 84mph. Gibbons-Fly graduated is from College Park, MD and attended DeMatha Catholic. He is attending Mercersburg Academy as a postgraduate year. He was an All-Tournament selection at the WWBA National Championships the past two summers.
Luke Carter, RHP/3B, Saegertown HS
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound RHP throws pitches from a low 3/4 arm slot allowing for late movement and downward action. Carter tops out at 82 mph and sits 79-80 during game action. He is a strike after strike thrower that keeps the ball down in the zone with good arm side run. Offensively Carter uses a strong lower half and solid approach at the plate to drive baseballs consistently. Carter is ranked No. 93 in the Class of 2013.
Troy Glendenning, 1B/3B, Kiski Area HS
Glendenning is a 6-foot-4, 255-pound 1B/3B who shows good glove work around the bag. His 90mph bat exit speed allows him to drive pitches, while his short stroke allows him to stay inside the baseball. Glendenning projects as a solid middle of the order hitter at the next level. He is the No. 105 ranked player in the Class of 2013.
Justin Beimel, RHP/1B, St. Marys HS
Beimel is a 6-4, 200-pound RHP who throws a splitter and has shown the ability to get hitters out. The No. 112 ranked player in the Class of 2013 couples the splitter with a fastball that tops out at 81mph and an 11/5 curveball that sits 66-67mph. Beimel has excellent control as evidenced by his ability to throw all three pitches to corners of the plate.
Zach Sheranko, LHP/1B, Pocono Mountain East
Sheranko is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound left handed pitcher with excellent potential. Sheranko was selected to participate in the Carpenter's Cup following his 2012 high school season. He is ranked No. 114 in the Class of 2013.
Austin Logan, SS/RHP, Beaver Area HS
Logan is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect that runs a 7.17 60-yard dash, throws 79mph from his position and has a bat exit speed velo of 82mph. Logan tops out at 84mph from the mound with a curveball that sits 71-73. He has an aggressive approach at the plate and has displayed good pop from the right side. Logan is ranked No. 121 in the Class of 2013.
Brooks Pletcher, 2B/SS, Hickory HS
Pletcher is a 5-foot-8, 135-pound 2B/SS who is ranked No. 122 in the Class of 2013. Pletcher recently completed a solid summer where he was named to the Youngstown, OH Class B League All-Star Team and to the CABA World Series All-Tournament Team.
Nat Hughes, C, Annville-Cleona HS
Hughes has shown pop times of 2.12-2.20 on 74mph throws out of the couch. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound right handed hitter is a physical prospect with a mechanically sound swing. He is the No. 123 ranked player in the Class of 2013.
Kevin Begley, C/3B. Deer Lakes HS
Begley is 5-10, 175-pound prospect that is ranked No. 124 in the Class of 2013. He has shown 2.12 pop times and throws of 75mph from the crouch.
Luke Lingle, RHP, Lower Dauphin HS
Lingle has demonstrated the ability to throw four pitches for strikes consistently. His fastball tops out at 78mph and his curveball sits 60-62. However, it is his 69mph changeup with good late downward action and his 68mph cutter that has hard late break that make him an interesting prospect. At 6-foot-3, 190-pounds Lingle has good upside and room to continue to develop. Lingle is ranked No. 129 in the Class of 2013.
