No. 2 Andrew Dutkanych

Scouting Report

8/19/21: Strong and durable, Dutkanych pitches with a high-3/4 slot and a fastball that explodes out of his hand at 93-96. He throws quality fastballs in the zone to both sides of the plate. He has a hard slider at 83-86 with tight spin (2600), deception and sharp, late break and diving action. The changeup was 79-80 and thrown with good arm speed and sink with the bottom occasionally dropping out. He’s athletic and repeats his delivery well.

8/17/21: With his size, stuff and delivery, Dutkanych presents one of the top all-around starter profiles in the 2022 class. Projectable with present strength at 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, Dutkanych surrendered two runs on four hits in four innings across two appearances, but showed the ability to establish and get outs with his fastball, which ranged from 93-96. Usually an out pitch, his slider wasn’t at its best in his first outing, making his work with the fastball all the more important. It was 83-86 with tight spin, deception, late break and diving action in his second appearance. He also mixed in a 79-80 changeup that occasionally had the bottom drop out.

2/27/21: Vanderbilt commit. Has a strong athletic durable body. Shows some rigidness to his strength, although he is compact and sturdy. Has mature body actions, with a bulldog demeanor. He is all business type who pitches with a ‘put the hitter away’ mentality. Starts his delivery from the far-left side of the rubber with a ¾, short quick compact arm slot that creates very good arm speed. Has good range of motion to his shoulder that is firm. When he can repeat his delivery, the results are consistently with an above average, mid to high 90’s FB. This full throttle and aggressive style approach produces a strong finish and some life in the strike zone. The FB can get on hitters’ hands quickly, while he uses all four corners of the strike zone. He keeps his line well with a short landing strike. Has a hard slider with late tilt and sharp down action shape. Compliments all his pitches with a late fade Change up to complete his mix. Dutkanych will dominate with quality pitches, which can compete at high level now. Once he harnesses his command, he will elevate his chance to minimize his pitch counts. Strong chance to be a starter at the next level.

Body: 6-foot-3, 200-pound
FB: T96. 95-96 mph. (Max spin 2461;  Avg 2339)
CH: 81-84 mph
SL: 85-86 mph

9/13/20: Dutkanych, a Vanderbilt recruit and third ranked right-hander in the class, was highly efficient in a “ho hum” first outing of the fall for Team Indiana as he surrendered just one hit in five innings while striking out seven. With a workhorse frame that includes a noticeably strong lower-half and long torso at 6-foot-3, 205-pounds, Dutkanych attacks hitters with a power mindset including challenging most predominantly with a fastball that was up to 93 mph (2350 RPM) in this outing. He overpowered hitters for the most part, and showed more intent to work in a power-changeup than in previous looks. The arm stroke is ultra-short, and almost catcher-like which allows the fastball to jump even more on the hitter as he works linear down the mound. The outing has quickly become “the norm” for Dutkanych who competes in the zone at all times, and is already a high-follow looking towards 2022.

5 innings, 7K, 0BB, 1H, 0R
