Top Stories of 2016: #8 - PIAA Releases Details for Six-Class System
December 24, 2016
By Jacob Gill
Pennsylvania Assistant Director of Scouting
First announced in 2015, the PIAA released earlier this year final details for the first season of the new six-classification system for baseball. These details include which of the six classes a school slots into, the number of state tournament berths granted to each district in each class, and the first round match-ups in the state tournament.
Notes on reading the table below:
- X-Y = District-Bid (e.g. 10-2 is the runner-up from District X and 1-5 is fifth place team from District I)
- If multiple districts are listed together (e.g. 5-1/6-1), they will combine to form a sub-region to determine that state tournament entrant
- A map is provided as a visual guide to the location of each district

In the small- and mid-size classifications, there is some reshuffling of the eastern (top) section of the bracket between the two years, although the number of bids per district/sub-region is the same in each year (this has not always been the case for previous two-year cycles). Due to population demographics, the number of bids per classification shifts from the western side of the state to the east as the classifications move from smaller to larger schools.
The state tournament will keep its Monday-Thursday-Monday format for the first three rounds, while the championship games will now be played on consecutive days (three each day) on Thursday and Friday (as opposed to all four on Friday under the old four-class system).
