When Loyalsock Township arrived at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC in late March for the National High School Invitational, it was the first time the 2013 and 2014 PIAA class AA state champions had set foot on dirt or grass all spring. Despite competing against schools three to five times their size from almost exclusively warm weather climates, the Lancers more than held their own, as they became the first Pennsylvania team invited to compete at the prestigious event.
LT went 2-2 to open its season at the NHSI, beating Horizon (AZ) 7-4 and Leesville Road (NC) 5-0, while falling to College Park (CA) 5-1 and Puyallup (WA) 12-0. They then returned home and ripped off 21 straight wins against in-state competition, a streak that ended in the state semifinals against Neumann-Goretti.
Leading the charge at the NHSI was current North Carolina freshman Kyle Datres (.444 AVG, 3B, 4 R and 6.0 IP, 2 H, BB, 8 K), Wake Forest signee Jimmy Webb (.455 AVG, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 SB), Shippensburg freshman Tommy Baggett (.417 AVG, 2B, 2 RBI), current Duke freshman Luke Glavin (5.2 IP, 4 H, BB, 7 K), and current senior Caleb Schmucker (5.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K).
