Day 2 of the Top Prospects Games featured three games, as we continued to get grade out the position players against some of the top arms in the state. It was a good day with three competitive games that kept scouts intrigued to the very end. Here are a few players who stood out on the day.
2019 LHP Zach Morris, Cabot HS; Morris is a large framed left-hander at 6-foot-2 220-pounds. He commanded the strike zone with two pitches, which lead to his two scoreless innings with 5 strike outs. His fastball worked down in the zone at 82-84 mph with late sink, he complimented it with a curveball thrown 64-66 with 1/7 shape and late action.
2019 RHP Landon McAllister, Har-Ber HS; He followed Morris’s dominant outing with one of his own. The right-hander worked 82-85 mph showing command of a slider which he threw 73-76 mph with sharp 10/4 break. He flashed a changeup with arm side run thrown 79 mph. McCallister is a solid athlete with a feel to pitch, and the competitiveness to pound the strike zone.
2018 MIF Chis Willard, Nashville HS; Willard is a 6-foot-2 infielder with a large frame and a thin build. He showed solid defensive actions, with fluid footwork, a normal exchange and the ability to throw the baseball 77 mph across the infield. He showed similar abilities in game, making plays consistently to his left, and straight ahead. Offensively his productive at bats in game including a triple, which he showed the ability to hit for doubles power to the right field gap, and in game speed. Overall Willard is a solid athlete which projects to continue to get better as he adds weight.
2020 OF Houston King, Cabot HS; Day one of the event, 2020 OF Caleb Gray had a big day, High school and summer teammate Houston King would not be outshined day two. King built on a solid showing day one where he ran a 6.64 in the 60, threw the baseball 81 mph from the outfield and showed advanced defensive skills. Day 2 he got the bat going creating offense consistently including a triple which drove in three runs. King is an advanced player and I expect him to be on the first wave of 2020 commitments that will happen over the next year.
2018 RHP Alex Langley, Riverview HS; Langley is a 6-foot-4 220-pound right-hander. He commanded the strike zone with his fastball 82-84 mph and his curveball was thrown 69-72 mph. He has a solid day, he uses a simple delivery with some choppiness to his delivery and late hand separation. As Langley cleans us some timing issues he projects to throw harder. He is a plus student with a 30+ on his ACT and over a 4.0 GPA. Langley will be a steal for someone as his best baseball is ahead of him.
2018 MIF/C Chandler Alaniz, Greenland HS; Alanis played the two days with more energy than anyone in the event. He showed to be an advanced player by throwing a 1.97 pop time, running a 6.89 in the 60. He threw the baseball 83 mph across the infield and produced exit velocity up to 88 mph. In game he had solid at bats, with consistent hard contact. However the thing that stood out the most was the amount of energy and effort he played the game. He seemed to be a player that would be a solid addition to a college locker room as person who could show up daily.
