Top Prospect Games - MOKAN: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri/Kansas held the Top Prospect Games - MOKAN on August 8 in Warrensburg, Missouri at the University of Central Missouri.  Nearly 40 players participated from Missouri and Kansas in the 2019 and 2018 classes.

We will break down the event position-by-position, taking a look at the catchers today.  The catching group was very talented with all nine catchers posting a 2.10-second pop time or better.  Four catchers had 75 mph positional velo or better, three catchers ran a 7.3 60-yard dash.  Players are listed below in alphabetical order.

Catchers

Braeden Hinton C / Nevada , MO / 2018

Hinton is a 6-foot-2 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.35 60 nd a 4.64 home to first.  He has a 91 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth rhythm with reverse toe touch, some hand load, looseness in hands with feel for the barrel and range in his swing, gap to gap approach, consistent  hard contact.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.14-seconds, 74 mph positional veto, fluid actions, feet on time with exchange, over the top release, arm works, mostly accurate throws, athletic movements to block.  Showed off power driving a ball to center field in game action. 

Grant Howard C / Olathe Northwest, KS / 2019

Howard is a 6-foot 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas 2019 class.  He ran a 7.37 60 and a 4.77 home to first.  He has a 76 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth load into back side, minimal hand movement, aggressive swing, mostly pull side contact, level through the zone, high finish.  Behind the plate, 2.07 to 2.14 pop times, 72 mph positional velo, thin set up in base, quick transfer with fluid footwork, momentum through the catch, soft hands, mostly accurate throws.

Mason Majors C / Staley, MO / 2018

Majors is a strong and durable 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.94 60 and a 4.94 home to first.  He has an 87 mph exit velocity. At the plate, simple and repeatable, consistent hard contact with power to the middle and pull side power, slight hand load, body stays under control, quick hands that manage the bat.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.90 and 1.94-seconds, 81 mph positional velo, quick catch and throw, aggressive momentum to throw, over the top release, sits low, flexible, soft hands, quick feet, mostly accurate throws.

Maclaine McCarter C / Blair Oaks , MO / 2019

McCarter is a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.87 60 and a 4.84 home to first.  He has a 77 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, wide base, short stride, hands manage the bat, gap-to-gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.13-seconds, 74 mph positional velo, high three quarters arm slot, quick feet, fluid exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Robert McKinley C / Leavenworth , KS / 2019

McKinley is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 8.02 60 and a 5.01 home to first.  He has an exit velocity of 74 mph.  At the plate, starts slightly open athletic stance, early to toe touch, controlled leg lift, level bat path, consistent line drives gap to gap during hitting evaluations.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.11-seconds, 76 mph positional velo, wide base, sits low, quick catch and throw, over the top release, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws.  Singled to left field in game action.

Ivan Quackenbush C / Kickapoo, MO / 2018

Quackenbush is a 6-foot 170-pound switch hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.39 60 and a4.73 home to first.  He has an 87 mph exit velocity from the left side and a 84 mph exit velocity from the right side. At the plate, flashed power to pull side, smooth load, quick and loose hands, quick bat speed, controlled leg lift from both sides, from right side, hands work inside the ball, gap-to-gap approach, short to the ball, solid contact.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.12-seconds, 71 mph positional velo, athletic and quick, quick transfer, fluid footwork, high exchange, feet create momentum, accurate, over the top release, arm works.  Singled and drove in a run during game action, has range in swing, hitting off speed pitch from right side,

Sean Roseborough C / Blue Valley Northwest, KS / 2019

Roseborough is a strongly built 6-foot-1 192-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.71 60 and a 4.78 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velocity. At the plate, smooth and accelerated swing, minimal hand movement in load, aggressive to the ball, occasional middle and pull side power, body stays under control, hard consistent contact during hitting evals.  Behind the plate, 1.98 to 2.07-second pop times, 75 mph positional velo, fluid actions, over the top release, clean exchange on time with feet, feet create momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws, soft hands receives the ball well.

Treven Veltman C / Wichita West, KS / 2018

Veltman is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.53 60 and a 4.76 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velocity. At the plate, smooth pre-swing rhythm, short stride with no wasted movement to load, quick hands, level bat path, showed power to pull side late in round, mostly middle to pull side contact.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.02-seconds, high three quarters release, clean exchange, fluid footwork, thin set up, momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws.

Josh Zellak C / Liberty, MO / 2018

Zellak is a 5-foot-11 1900-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.40 60 and a 4.90 home to first.  He has an 83 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, controlled leg lift with smooth tempo to load, closed stride, level and loose hands, mostly middle of the field contact during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.10 and 2.18-seconds, 72 mph positional velo, sits low, slight staggered in feet, quick jab set on time with exchange, fluid transfer, short over the top release, mostly accurate throws. Singled to opposite field and tripled to right center field in game action,
